What does the Quran say about adopting orphans?  What is their status in the family?  Do Orphans inherit from their adopted families?

I first would like the reader to know that this website contains 10s (tens) of articles that covered the Rights of Orphans in Islam.  They can be all viewed here.  Also, here is a list of the Noble Verses that deal with the Orphans, and how they are to be treated with care and kindness and respect, and to be cared for, and for Muslims to protect their money until they grow up.  However, this brief article will show what the Orphans would be like in the family if they get sponsored or adopted by the family:

An orphan is still a stranger.  He does not inherit, except from his deceased biological parents.  He is not a biological brother or sister to his adopted family.  They are to carry their biological fathers' last names, and not carry the adopting families' last names.  But nonetheless, the Orphan is to be treated as a member of the family with dignity, honor and respect.  The following Noble Verses are only a small example from the many other Noble Verses that deal with the Rights of Orphans in Islam.  Again, here is a list of the Noble Verses that deal with the Orphans, and how they are to be treated with care and kindness and respect, and to be cared for, and for Muslims to protect their money until they grow up.

Also, the adopting parent can still write a will to give to whomever he wishes for up to 1/3 (one third) of his/her wealth.  So an orphan child, who perhaps has been raised with the family for much of his life, can still be part of the inheritance through a special portion that the parent would have to allocate for him/her in their will.  And like I said, it could be up to a 1/3 of the entire wealth.
