1- The Noble Quran's Claim in Noble Verse 21:32:

The Noble Quran is filled with scientific statements and notions. These are statements of Allah Almighty describing how He created things on earth and in the Universe. What's most amazing is that all of these scientific statements and notions had been proven to be in perfect agreement with science and our modern-day scientific discoveries. Allah Almighty made the Noble Quran be Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) Everlasting Divine Miracle and proof for Prophethood. The Holy Book certainly stood the test of time 1,500 years ago with Its Claims, Prophecies and Miraculous language eloquence, and it does again and again in our day today with Its overwhelming agreement with science and discoveries that were not known to man 1,500 years ago.

Allah Almighty Said: "We will soon show them Our signs in the Universe and inside their selves, until it will become quite clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient as regards your Lord that He is a witness over all things? (The Noble Quran, 41:53)"

With this said, to a simple bedouin such as our Beloved and Blessed Prophet, Role Model and Teacher, Muhammad, Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon him, who lived in Arabia 1,500 years ago, looking up in the sky during the day and seeing it blue with white clouds, and looking at it at night and seeing it black with bright dots of stars, wouldn't think in a million years (if he were to live in his same status) that there is an actual protective layer (what we call today the Ozone layer) covering the entire planet earth!!!

Ozone is a roof, clouds aren't:

Obviously, the Noble Verses below are not talking about clouds, because clouds are scattered in the air, while Allah Almighty Said that He made the sky (Ozone) a "raised" and "protected roof"! A roof is a one solid piece that covers, shelters and protects the things under it.

Let us look at what Allah Almighty Said in the Noble Quran:

[021:032] And WE have made the heaven a roof, well-protected, yet they turn away from its Signs.

‏21:32 وجعلنا السماء سقفا محفوظا وهم عن اياتها معرضون

Notice how Allah Almighty created our sky/heaven to be a protective and protected ceiling for us.

Question:

Verse 21:32 وَجَعَلْنَا السَّمَاءَ سَقْفًا مَّحْفُوظًا وَهُمْ عَنْ آيَاتِهَا مُعْرِضُون

The word (محفوظاً) does it mean (protected) or (protective) in other words is it the sky protects us or is it that the sky is protected. Is it objective or subjective

Answering:

It is both objective and subjective. The sky is both a protector for us and is also protected from harm. A SAQF سَقْفًا (ceiling) is something that is above one's head and is both protective and protected. MAHFOOTH محفوظ (protected, protective) is derived from HIFTH (keep, memorize as in memorizing the Quran). Allah Almighty in the Glorious Quran said that earth is:

       - Spherical: "egg-shaped" [1].
       - Is rotating around itself.
       - Is moving in space in curvy orbits [2].
       - Is in constant motion.
       - Is suspended in space.
       - Is swimming in space.
       - Is traveling through the constantly expanding universe [3].
       - The sunsetless North Pole miracle in the Glorious Quran [4].

At the top of the North Pole, the sun never sets [4], and I showed the video for that, and also quoted the scientific sources for that. Also in the lands near by, it almost never sets either, and I quoted sources for that as well, and also showed pictures of the "polar night" skies on these lands that are near the sunsetless North Pole.

They also spoke almost unintelligibly (18:93), the Glorious Quran says. They hardly spoke intelligibly (18:93). Historians have proven that the Barbarians of the North used to speak unintelligibly. The actual meaning of the word "Barbarian" is someone who speaks unintelligibly.

Prophet Muhammad "did see" (Quran 53.18) the Aurora Lights covering the horizons above the earth from space. Dhil-Qarnayn went up to the farthest northern lands where the sun is up, and "Thus it was", Allah Almighty completed the "full knowledge" regarding Dhil-Qarnayn's mission. The early Muslims believed that Dhil Qarnayn reached the people of the farthest norths of the earth. The following is a map of Al-Sharif Al-Idrisi in year 1154 giving the geographic location of where Dhil Qarnayn went according to the understanding of the early Muslims of Noble Verses 18:83-100:

Dhil-Qarnayn literally means "man of two horns"

Here we see Allah Almighty speaking of a building's roof falling down on the people. This means that the roof is:

1- A physical protection from above - in this case protection from rain, wind and burning sun rays all coming from above.

2- Is located above us.

So when Allah Almighty described our sky (Ozone layer) as a protected and elevated roof, then there is no question that He, the Almighty, referred to our protective and well-guarded Ozone layer protecting and guarding us from the dangers of space!

And again, to a simple bedouin such as our Beloved and Blessed Prophet, Role Model and Teacher, Muhammad, Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon him, who lived in Arabia 1,500 years ago, looking up in the sky during the day and seeing it blue with white clouds, and looking at it at night and seeing it black with bright dots of stars, wouldn't think in a million years (if he were to live in his same status) that there is an actual protective layer (what we call today the Ozone layer) covering the entire planet earth!!!

THE PROTECTED ROOF

In the Qur'an, Allah calls our attention to a very important attribute of the sky:

We made the sky a preserved and protected roof yet still they turn away from Our Signs. (Qur'an, 21:32)

This attribute of the sky has been proved by scientific research carried out in the 20th century: The atmosphere surrounding the Earth serves crucial functions for the continuity of life. While destroying many meteors-big and small-as they approach the Earth, it prevents them from falling to Earth and harming living things.

In addition, the atmosphere filters the light rays coming from space that are harmful to living things. The most striking feature of the atmosphere is that it lets only harmless and useful rays-visible light, near ultraviolet light and radio waves pass through. All of this radiation is vital for life. Near ultraviolet rays, which are only partially let in by the atmosphere, are very important for the photosynthesis of plants and for the survival of all living beings. The majority of the intense ultraviolet rays emitted from the Sun are filtered out by the ozone layer of the atmosphere. Only a limited and essential part of the ultraviolet spectrum reaches the Earth.

The protective function of the atmosphere does not end here. The atmosphere also protects the earth from the freezing cold of the space, which is approximately -270^oC.

It is not only the atmosphere that protects the Earth from harmful effects. In addition to the atmosphere, the Van Allen Belt-the layer caused by the magnetic field of the Earth-also serves as a shield against the harmful radiation that threatens our planet. This radiation, which is constantly emitted by the Sun and other stars, is deadly to living things. If the Van Allen belt did not exist, the massive outbursts of energy called solar flares that frequently occur in the Sun would destroy all life on Earth.

The magnetosphere layer, formed by the magnetic field of the Earth, serves as a shield protecting the Earth from celestial bodies, harmful cosmic rays and particles. In the above picture, this magnetosphere layer, which is also named Van Allen Belts, is seen. These belts at thousands of kilometres above the Earth protect the living things on the Earth from the fatal energy that would otherwise reach it from space.

All these scientific findings prove that the world is protected in a very particular way. The important thing is that this protection was made known in the Qur'an in the verse "We made the sky a preserved and protected roof" fourteen centuries ago.

On the importance of the Van Allen Belt, Dr. Hugh Ross says:

In fact, the Earth has the highest density of any of the planets in our Solar System. This large nickel-iron core is responsible for our large magnetic field. This magnetic field produces the Van-Allen radiation shield, which protects the Earth from radiation bombardment. If this shield were not present, life would not be possible on the Earth. Most people looking at the sky do not think about the protective aspect of the atmosphere. They almost never think what kind of a place the world would be like if this structure did not exist. The above photo belongs to a giant crater caused by a meteor that fell in Arizona, in the USA. If the atmosphere did not exist, millions of meteoroids would fall to the Earth and the Earth would become an inhabitable place. Yet, the protective aspect of the atmosphere allows living things to survive in safety. This is certainly Allah's protection of people and a miracle proclaimed in the Qur'an.

In short, a perfect system is at work high above the Earth. It surrounds our world and protects it against external threats. Centuries ago, Allah informed us in the Qur'an of the world's atmosphere functioning as a protective shield.

It is truly quite amazing that Allah Almighty in the Noble Quran Said these precise words through the tongue of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, that no ordinary person would've thought about. I mean who would've been able to come up with such sentences and words 1,500 years ago to describe our Ozone layer as an elevated protective ceiling? Who on earth would've thought about that??

The answer is simple. The Prophet didn't think about anything. He only spoke what was sent down to him from Divine Truth and Revelations! Allah Almighty Said:

"We will soon show them Our signs in the Universe and INSIDE THEIR SELVES, until it will become quite clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient as regards your Lord that He is a witness over all things? (The Noble Quran, 41:53)"
