Is Surah 10:90-92 Copied from the Talmud?

Refuting Sam Shamoun’s distorted claims

Continuing with our series of refuting Shamoun’s responses to Shabir Ally, we now deal with an alleged claim by Shamoun, that Surah 10, verses 90-92 are borrowed from the Talmud.

This rebuttal shall be very easy indeed, because when one reads the verses, and then reads the quotation from the Talmud, one will see that there is no way that the Quran borrowed anything from the Talmud!

Another comparison will again demonstrate that the Qur'an was not copied from the Bible. In the Bible we are told that God drowned the Pharaoh and his army when they pursued Moses, on whom be peace, and his people (see Exodus 14:28). The clear indication in that description is that the body of the Pharaoh perished in the sea. However, the Qur'an dared to differ and prove true. In the Qur'an we find that God promised to preserve the body of the Pharaoh as a sign for later generations (see Qur'an 10:90-92).

Response:

Shabir is partially correct here since the Quran did not borrow the story of Pharaoh from just the Holy Bible, but from the Talmud as well. See below.

True to the Qur'anic promise, the mummified body of the Pharaoh was discovered by Loret in 1898 at Thebes in the Kings' Valley (see The Bible, the Qur'an and Science by Dr. Maurice Bucaille, p. 238). From there it was transported to Cairo. Elliot Smith removed its wrappings on July 8, 1907 and gave a detailed description in his book entitled the Royal Mummies (1912).

From which source did the author of the Qur'an derive this information? How did the author of the Qur'an know that the Pharaoh's body was preserved whereas the knowledge that the ancient

Egyptians mummified their dead was not discovered until recently? And how could the author of the Qur'an predict that the body of the Pharaoh will be discovered later, unless the author was God Himself?

we already mentioned, the story of Pharaoh's repentance at the face of destruction was not a new revelation. The Talmud documented this story long before the Quran was ever compiled.

Perceive the great power of repentance! Pharaoh, king of Egypt, uttered very wicked words - 'Who is the god whose voice I shall obey? (Exod. 5:2). Yet as he repented, saying. 'Who is like unto thee among the gods?' (Exod. 15:2). God saved him from death; for it saith; Almost had I stretched out my hands and destroyed; but God let him live, that he might declare his power and strength.' Using Shabir's logic we are now forced to conclude that God revealed the Talmud to the Rabbis since they knew of Pharaoh's body being preserved even before the Quran was written!

Hence, there is nothing in the Quran that had not been previously known by the Jews, Christians and pagans.

 

My Response

Let me now quote the relevant Quranic passages, and we shall see if the Quran borrowed anything from this Talmudic story, here are the verses:

 

010.090
YUSUFALI: We took the Children of Israel across the sea: Pharaoh and his hosts followed them in insolence and spite. At length, when overwhelmed with the flood, he said: "I believe that there is no god except Him Whom the Children of Israel believe in: I am of those who submit (to Allah in Islam)."

YUSUFALI: (It was said to him): "Ah now!- But a little while before, wast thou in rebellion!- and thou didst mischief (and violence)!

YUSUFALI: "This day shall We save thee in the body, that thou mayest be a sign to those who come after thee! but verily, many among mankind are heedless of Our Signs!"

 

Shamoun has committed the mistake of thinking that these verses make the claim that Allah saved the pharaoh. Shamoun thinks verses 92 says that pharaoh was saved, he is wrong as usual. No where does it say that the pharaoh would be saved, rather it says his body will be saved, meaning preserved. The reason being is because God wanted to give this as a sign to other generations of people who would come after.

So basically what happened is that when the pharaoh and his army were chasing the Israelites in the sea, God turned the sea against them, seeing this the pharaoh became scared and repented, however so, the repentance was most obviously not sincere, he was just scared, so God simply promised to save his body, to save his body as a sign for mankind. The pharaoh was not saved, he was killed, and his body was only saved and preserved. His body is in fact still preserved to this day.

With all that said, there is nothing similar between the Quranic and Talmudic account. The Talmud says something completely different! It contradicts the Quran and has no real wisdom behind it, all it says is the pharaoh was saved, the Quran does not say that the pharaoh was saved, it says his body was saved, and his body was saved to be as a sign for future generations of mankind, which is the wisdom behind it.

As I said, the Talmudic incident also has no wisdom, it in fact has very bad wisdom, here is the Talmudic story again:

Perceive the great power of repentance! Pharaoh, king of Egypt, uttered very wicked words - 'Who is the god whose voice I shall obey? (Exod. 5:2). Yet as he repented, saying. 'Who is like unto thee among the gods?' (Exod. 15:2). How in the world does this show God’s strength and power? It in fact shows the opposite, why? Well the pharaoh keeps getting let off! Time and time again the pharaoh keeps fighting against God and Moses, and time and time against he gets let off by God, so this actually would give some people the impression and idea that they could also keep on fighting God and he would keep letting you get away with it.

Just go read the OT, God keeps on sending painful punishments to the pharaoh and his people, and every time the pharaoh says he will let the Israelites go and stop his crimes, yet when God stops the punishment the Pharaoh then goes back to his old ways.

I shall now quote the OT, the book of Exodus, to show these punishments and how the pharaoh kept saying he would stop, but simply lied and continued, therefore putting these incidents with the Talmudic story shows God to be weak, and actually makes the pharaoh look smarter than God since he always repents to God when is punished, then goes back to oppose God when he is let off the hook, what kind of picture does this give? Not a good one, here are the relevant chapters from the Bible:

Exodus 10

¹ And the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might show these my signs before him:  ² And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son's son, what things I have wrought in Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that ye may know how that I am the LORD.  ³ And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me.  ⁴ Else, if thou refuse to let my people go, behold, to morrow will I bring the locusts into thy coast:  ⁵ And they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field:  ⁶ And they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians; which neither thy fathers, nor thy fathers' fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day.   ²¹ And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.  ²² And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days:  ²³ They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.  ²⁴ And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you.  ²⁵ And Moses said, Thou must give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God.  ²⁶ Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God; and we know not with what we must serve the LORD, until we come thither.  ²⁷ But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go.  ²⁸ And Pharaoh said unto him, Get thee from me, take heed to thyself, see my face no more; for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die.  ²⁹ And Moses said, Thou hast spoken well, I will see thy face again no more.  

So as you can see, God keeps punishing the pharaoh, and when the pharaoh sees all the punishments, he repents and lies and says he will let Moses and his people go, but when he sees that the punishments have been stopped against him and his people, he turns back to his old ways and breaks his word. If we put this all with the Talmudic story it paints a very bad picture, it shows God to be weak, and it shows the pharaoh as being smarter than God! The Talmudic story had no idea about what it was saying, there was no wisdom behind the story, no nothing, it just makes God look weak to let the pharaoh off the hook again, when we all know the pharaohs repentance is always fake and done under pressure, and not sincere.

The Bible does not make this mistake, since the Bible records that God eventually did kill the pharaoh, unlike the silly Talmudic story, here is what the Bible says on the pharaohs death:

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,  ² Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea.  ³ For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.  ⁴ And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honored upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so.  ⁵ And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?  ⁶ And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him:  ⁷ And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.  ⁸ And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand.  ⁹ But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon.

So as you can see, the Bible shows God killing the pharaoh and his men, unlike the Talmud which says that God saved the pharaoh in the sea, letting the pharaoh off the hook again.

So with all this said, it can be conclusively said that the Talmudic account is nothing but a lie, and the person who wrote it had no idea about what they were talking about, since all the author did was make God look weak, and made the pharaoh look smarter than God, since he always repented and when God had ceased his punishments on him, he would then return to his old ways. The Talmudic story shows no strength or power of God as it says, so therefore the story is thrown out, since God cannot be played with.

Both the Noble Quran and the Bible agree that the pharaoh was killed; the only difference is that in the Quran God promises to save the Pharaohs body as a sign for the future generations of mankind.

So Shamoun is completely wrong in claiming the Quran borrowed this from the Talmud, the Talmud says something 100% different, and it shows God as being weak and easy to play. The Quran does no thing.

I could have simply written one line for this rebuttal to refute Shamoun, the Talmud says that the pharaoh was saved, the Quran does not. Case closed.
