Why does Allah Almighty allow Muslim men to marry non Muslim women, but doesn't allow Muslim women to marry non Muslim men?

Note: Some of the writings of my article come from the foot notes of the Noble Quran that I have that was translated by Sheikh (Minister) Abdallah Yusuf Ali; may Allah Almighty rest his soul.

It is lawful by Allah Almighty for Muslim men to marry only Jewish or Christian women, but not lawful for Muslim women to marry non Muslim men of any faith. In this article we will see the wisdom behind it.

Let us look at Noble Verse 5:5 "This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book [Jews and Christians] is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book, revealed before your time,- when ye give them their due dowers, and desire chastity, not lewdness, nor secret intrigues if any one rejects faith, fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good)."

Let us look at Noble Verse 2:221 "Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters), until they believe: A slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman, even though she allures you. Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe: A man slave who believes is better than an unbeliever, even though he allures you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the Fire. But God beckons by His Grace to the Garden (of bliss) and forgiveness, and makes His Signs clear to mankind: That they may celebrate His praise."

"O ye who believe! take not for friends and protectors those who take your religion for a mockery or sport,- whether among those who received the Scripture before you, or among those who reject Faith; but fear ye God, if ye have faith (indeed). (The Noble Quran, 5:57)"

"O ye who believe! When there come to you believing women refugees, examine (and test) them: God knows best as to their Faith: if ye ascertain that they are Believers, then send them not back to the Unbelievers (Luke 2:52: GOD forgave Jesus' sins and was "charitable" with him). They are not lawful (wives) for the Unbelievers, nor are the (Unbelievers) lawful (husbands) for them. But pay the Unbelievers what they have spent (on their dower), and there will be no blame on you if ye marry them on payment of their dower to them. But hold not to the guardianship of unbelieving women: ask for what ye have spent on their dowers, and let the (Unbelievers) ask for what they have spent (on the dowers of women who come over to you). Such is the command of God: He judges (with justice) between you. And God is Full of Knowledge and Wisdom. (The Noble Quran, 60:10)"

The reason why Allah Almighty didn't allow Muslim women to marry non Muslim men including the People of the Book, is because women especially in the Middle East 1400 years ago used to culturally follow their husbands' traditions/religions.

Arabs used to be idol worshipers, and they had different methods of idol worshiping depending on the tribe. When a woman marries a man from a tribe, then she is EXPECTED to follow his and his family's method of worship. So automatically, she would become part of them.

So when a Muslim woman marries a non Muslim man, she would be EXPECTED to follow his religion. This would also mean that the children that she will bring to life will also be non Muslims. So this is very serious in Islam.

That is why Allah Almighty prohibited for Muslim women to marry non Muslim men. As for Muslim men, from the non Muslim women, they are not allowed to marry any of them except from the People of the Book.

I as a Muslim am not allowed to marry a Hindu woman for instance according to the Laws of the Noble Quran. But I can however marry a Jewish woman for instance.

Islam is not exclusive. Social intercourse, including inter-marriage, is permitted with the People of the Book. A Muslim man may marry a woman from their ranks on the same terms as he would marry a Muslim woman, i.e., he must give her an economic and moral status, and must not be actuated merely by motives of lust or physical desire. A Muslim woman may not marry a non-Muslim man, because her Muslim status would be affected: the wife ordinarily takes the nationality and status given by her husband's law (especially in the Middle Eastern culture among the Arab pagans 1400 years ago). A non-Muslim woman marrying a Muslim husband would be expected eventually to accept Islam. Any man or woman, of any race or faith, may, on accepting Islam, freely marry any Muslim woman or man, provided it be from motives of purity and chastity and not of lewdness. Muslim men are prohibited to marry pagan women. Only women from the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) are ok to marry from.

Important Note: If we are not allowed to take the Jews and Christians as close and personal friends and protectors, do you think it would be a good idea, TODAY with the non-Muslim systems that we live under, to marry from them and risk our children to stray away from Islam? Now regular friendship and kindness are allowed to all non-hostile disbelievers (Luke 2:52: GOD forgave Jesus' sins and was "charitable" with him). Allah Almighty said:

[005:008] O ye who believe! stand out firmly for God, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear God (Luke 2:52: GOD forgave Jesus' sins and was "charitable" with him). For God is well-acquainted with all that ye do.

[060:008] God forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for God loveth those who are just.

1- Careless divorce will bring sin upon you:

Marriage with the intention of divorce (just for only sexual enjoyment) is forbidden in the Glorious Quran. Allah Almighty said that careless and irresponsible divorce will bring sin upon you:

"You bear no sin if you divorce your wives AS LONG AS YOU HAVE NOT (ma-lam مالم) had a sexual contact with them, .... (The Noble Quran, 2:236)"

If the marriage has not been consummated yet (no sexual intercourse yet; still in a fianc�e-like relationship but through a legal and legit marriage), then the couple can break up; divorce. But after sexual intercourse is done between the bride and groom, they are now a husband and wife. So while they are still a bride and groom, they can divorce without issue.

Muta marriage was a temporary marriage that destined for divorce, which Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is said to have allowed for Muslim men who fought in battles in distant lands. They were allowed to marry women there temporarily. Allah Almighty has thoroughly prohibited all forms of temporary marriages, and has stressed the holiness of permanent marriage in the Glorious Quran.

Was it legalized prostitution? Was it a form of pimping women and men for just sex? Absolutely not, because even with the Muta marriage, there was still the requirement of at least two witnesses testifying that the couple have married (announcing the marriage publiclyprotects everyone. Ex: Married women are not approached by other men as single women, and pregnant women are known to be pregnant wives, not pregnant harlots), the dowry payment upon the husband, and Muslim women still had to go through the Idda period after the divorce. So it was a legitimate full marriage but with the exception that it was destined for planned divorce (i.e., termination). Allah Almighty ultimately forbade intentional non-permanent marriages.

Again, here is what Allah Almighty Said regarding divorce in the Noble Quran. It almost always brings sin upon the regular married folks. However, if a man is engaged with a woman, and they had a marriage contract already done, with dowry payment, witnesses and announcing to all people in their community that they got married, but they have not yet consummated the marriage through sexual intercourse, then there is no sin upon them if they divorce, as long as they have not consummated the marriage:

‏2:236 لاجناح عليكم ان طلقتم النساء مالم تمسوهن او تفرضوا لهن فريضة ومتعوهن على الموسع قدره وعلى المقتر قدره متاعا بالمعروف حقا على المحسنين

"You bear no sin if you divorce your wives AS LONG AS YOU HAVE NOT (ma-lam مالم) had a sexual contact with them تمسوهن, and before settling (the amount of) the nuptial premium (for them). Yet, you should make provisions for them (even then); the affluent in keeping with his means, and the poor according to what he can afford. A fair provision is an obligation upon the pious. (The Noble Quran, 2:236)"

Ma-lam مالم in Arabic means "as long as you have not," which makes it a condition and a Law. The meaning of the word مالم as "as long as you have not" is very well-known in Arabic and the translation is also proven by ample English translations of this Noble Verse. So irresponsible divorce after the consummation of marriage (after sex) will bring sin upon the irresponsible and guilty one(s). The Noble Verse is crystal-clear about this.

2- The solemn holiness of marriage (ميثاقا غليظا):

Also, the covenant of marriage in the Glorious Quran Is a Mighty and Solemn Covenant ميثاقا غليظا (mee-thaa-qan gha-leetha). This exact phrase is mentioned three times (4:21, 4:154, 33:7) in the Glorious Quran for the following Covenants:

1- For the solemn covenant ميثاقا غليظا of marriage between the husband and wife.

2- For the solemn covenant ميثاقا غليظا between GOD Almighty and the Prophets.

3- For the solemn covenant ميثاقا غليظا between GOD Almighty and the Jews on the holiness of the Sabbath.

Again, please see Noble Verses 4:21, 4:154, 33:7. Divorce is allowed, but it is a detested lawful thing to Allah Almighty. Abusing it or misusing it will bring sin upon you.

3- One wife is the most preferred to Allah Almighty:

Furthermore, Allah Almighty made it crystal clear that He best prefers for Muslim men to only marry one wife, each. Messing around with marrying multiple women is a slippery slope that could bring sin upon you:

Noble Verse 4:3 "If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice."

Marry one woman to prevent you from doing injustice. This is further supported also in the following Noble Verse:

Noble Verse 4:129 "Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire: But turn not away (from a woman) altogether, so as to leave her (as it were) hanging (in the air). If ye come to a friendly understanding, and practise self-restraint, God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful."

Polygamy is allowed by Allah Almighty, but like divorce, it too is a detested lawful thing to Allah Almighty. And most certainly, abusing it or misusing it will bring sin upon you.

Allah Almighty, however, doesn't really like us to marry from Jews and Christians:

"Never will the Jews or the Christians be satisfied with thee unless thou follow their form of religion. Say: 'The Guidance of God,-that is the (only) Guidance.' Wert thou to follow their desires after the knowledge which hath reached thee, then wouldst thou find neither Protector nor helper against God. (The Noble Quran, 2:120)"

"They say: 'Become Jews or Christians if ye would be guided (To salvation).' Say thou: 'Nay! (I would rather) the Religion of Abraham the True, and he joined not gods with God.' (The Noble Quran, 2:135)"

"Indeed they reject the truth, those that say "God is Christ, the son of Mary." For indeed, Christ said, worship God, who is my God and your God. (The Holy Quran, 5:72)"

Trinity today, and the corruption of the Torah (The Law sent to the Jews) to prove that the Jews are the best people for all times and all places and the denial of Jesus peace be upon him and the many other false teachings are evidence of the false teachings and practices of the Christians and the Jews.

There is no need for a Muslim to put himself into the trouble of marrying from the People of the Book of today, because most of them are corrupted, and Allah Almighty orders us to not take them as friends or protectors. We must know that according to Islam most of the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) are perverted transgressors, deceiving and in some cases are hypocrites.

Muslim men and women be aware of fornication (zina)! Stay away from it!

Let us look at Noble Verse 24:3-5 "Let no (Muslim) man guilty of adultery or fornication marry and but a (Muslim) woman similarly guilty, or an Unbeliever (pagan woman): nor let any but such a man or an Unbeliever marry such a woman: to the Believers such a thing is forbidden. And those who launch a charge against chaste women, and produce not four witnesses (to support their allegations),- flog them with eighty stripes; and reject their evidence ever after: for such men are wicked transgressors; unless they repent thereafter and mend (their conduct); for God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

Notice how Allah Almighty allows a Muslim man who commits fornication to marry a pagan woman, and a Muslim woman who commits fornication to marry a non Muslim man. The reason for that is because in Allah Almighty's sight, those who commit fornication or adultery are no longer Muslims, "unless they repent thereafter and mend (their conduct); for God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful...(24:5)"

A Muslim man or woman who commits fornication or adultery is not any better than the pagan idolater in Allah Almighty's sight. This is a very serious sin in Islam that Muslims must be extremely careful from. Fornication is Satan's number one temptation to all mankind. Muslims are ordered to resist it and to not fall into it.

If you are a Muslim brother or sister who committed fornication (zina) before and was not aware of Noble Verses 24:3-5, and repented, and would like to marry a good Muslim man or woman who never committed fornication before, then Allah Almighty will accept your marriage my dear brother or sister, because He the Almighty will only punish those who know the truth after it was recited to them; "Except for those that repent (even) after that [after the truth had been revealed to them; see 3:85], and make amends; for verily Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (The Noble Quran, 3:89)" Allah Almighty forgives those who rejected the truth after accepting it and went astray afterwards and repent later.

Allah Almighty forgives those who did not know. In the case of fornication, if a Muslim man or woman did not know that fornication is similar to rejecting Islam and becoming an infidel, then Allah Almighty will excuse them after they know the truth and they repent and stop doing it. Their marriage from good Muslim men or women who never committed fornication or adultery would be Islamicly valid.

Bible says that Jews from their essence were liars (See also Isaiah 1:9-17: Yahweh called Israel Sodom, because it spreads evil and is unjust). From their "birth" they were liars writing lies the Old Testament declares them. The Bible is full of man-made corruption and fabrications especially in the Jews' ancient history and stories.
