Function of the Mountains

Think of the Earth like an onion, made up of many different layers (1). The outer layer is called the crust (2) and the crust is much thinner than any of the other layers.(3). It float on the mantle below the earth's crust. (4)

Thus Allah has fixed mountains on earth crust to prevent its fast movement. Hence, If there were no mountains then the thin earth's crust float fastly & we would having earthquake in every minute of our life. Thus:

“The mountains play an important role in stabilizing the crust of the earth". (5)

This information is also mention in the following verses:

"He created the heavens [sky] without any pillars that ye can see; He set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should sway (TAMEED, see definitions below) with you; and He scattered through it beasts of all kinds. We send down rain from the sky, and produce on the earth every kind of noble creature, in pairs."

Allah is showing proves again and again so that man will believe that the Noble Quran is the pure word of Allah.

تميد (tameed): تحرك ومال moved and turned or started going in turns.

وفي الحديث: لما خلق الله الارض جعلت تميد فارساها بالجبال and in the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him: When Allah Almighty Created the earth, it was made to TAMEED, and then He FIXED the mountains in it to stabilize it.

يميد (yameed): زاغ (zaagh) ran away.

ماد (maada): اضطرب (id-turibaa) became alarmed and out of control.

ماد ميدا (maada maydan): تمايل (tamaayala) started going into turns.

Again, several English translations translated it as "sway" or something similar.

Clearly, TAMEED means to sway. It doesn't mean that it prevents earthquakes as the anti-Islamics lie on the Glorious Quran. It means to sway, not to shake or to make the earth shaking. No, it means to sway, or to be out of control, or off in its orbit or path.

according to the word by word quran dictionary alqa means to throw in the ground but we know from modern geology that mountains where not thrown into the ground

Answer:

The Glorious Quran says Allah Almighty had SET (fastened is also correct as brother Farhan said) firm mountains IN THE EARTH to keep it stable:

[016:015] And He has set up on IN the earth والقى في الارض mountains standing firm رواسى , lest it should sway with you; and rivers and roads; that ye may guide yourselves;

‏16:15 والقى في الارض رواسى ان تميد بكم وانهارا وسبلا لعلكم تهتدون

Geologists have proven that if earth was completely flat, then it would've been in a constant vibration. Mountains do stabilize the earth during its rotation around its own axle. Earth is rotating around itself at a speed of 1,000 miles per hour! It is not a slow motion:

"The circumference of the Earth at the equator is 25,000 miles. The Earth rotates in about 24 hours. Therefore, if you were to hang above the surface of the Earth at the equator without moving, you would see 25,000 miles pass by in 24 hours, at a speed of 25000/24 or just over 1000 miles per hour."
