Yusuf Ali: [098:001] Those who reject (Truth), among the People of the Book and among the Polytheists, were not going to depart (from their ways) until there should come to them Clear Evidence,-[098:002] An apostle from God, rehearsing scriptures kept pure and holy: [098:003] Wherein are laws (or decrees) right and straight. [098:004] Nor did the People of the Book make schisms, until after there came to them Clear Evidence. [098:005] And they have been commanded no more than this: To worship God, offering Him sincere devotion, being true (in faith); to establish regular prayer; and to practise regular charity; and that is the Religion Right and Straight. [098:006] Those who reject (Truth), among the People of the Book and among the Polytheists, will be in Hell-Fire, to dwell therein (for aye). They are the worst of creatures. [098:007] Those who have faith and do righteous deeds,- they are the best of creatures.
Dr. Munir Munshey (one of www.answering-christianity.com's authors): [098:001] Those of the people of the scriptures and the polytheists who do not believe, will not give up (disbelief) until the clear evidence comes to them.[098:002] The messenger of Allah recites from the sacred and sanctified scripture _ (the Qur’an), [098:003] Containing sound and straightforward rules. [098:004] Those given the (earlier) scriptures (argued and) differed amongst themselves after clear proofs had already come to them. [098:005] What they were commanded was to worship only Allah with sincerity and exclusive devotion; and to worship nothing and nobody else with Him. (They were ordered) to establish ‘salat’, and to pay the ‘zakat’. That is truly the stable (and established) religion. [098:006] Whoever denies among the people of the book and the polytheists, would be in the fire of hell, and would stay there forever. Such are the worst of the creation. [098:007] While those who believe and do good deeds are certainly the best of the creation.

Sher Ali: [098:001] Those, who disbelieve from among the People of the Book and the idolaters, would not desist from disbelief until there should come to them the clear evidence -[098:002] A Messenger from ALLAH, reciting unto them the pure Scriptures, [098:003] Wherein are lasting commandments. [098:004] And those to whom the Book was given did not become divided until after clear evidence had come to them. [098:005] And they were not commanded but to serve ALLAH, being sincere to HIM in obedience, and being upright, and to observe Prayer and pay the Zakát. And that is the right religion. [098:006] Verily, those who disbelieve from among the People of the Book and the idolaters, will be in the Fire of Hell, abiding therein. They are the worst of creatures. [098:007] Verily, those who believe and do righteous deeds - they are the best of creatures.
Shakir: [098:001] Those who disbelieved from among the followers of the Book and the polytheists could not have separated (from the faithful) until there had come to them the clear evidence:[098:002] An apostle from Allah, reciting pure pages, [098:003] Wherein are all the right ordinances. [098:004] And those who were given the Book did not become divided except after clear evidence had come to them. [098:005] And they were not enjoined anything except that they should serve Allah, being sincere to Him in obedience, upright, and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, and that is the right religion. [098:006] Surely those who disbelieve from among the followers of the Book and the polytheists shall be in the fire of hell, abiding therein; they are the worst of men. [098:007] (As for) those who believe and do good, surely they are the-best of men.
Pickthall: [098:001] Those who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters could not have left off (erring) till the clear proof came unto them,[098:002] A messenger from Allah, reading purified pages [098:003] Containing correct scriptures. [098:004] Nor were the People of the Scripture divided until after the clear proof came unto them. [098:005] And they are ordered naught else than to serve Allah, keeping religion pure for Him, as men by nature upright, and to establish worship and to pay the poor-due. That is true religion. [098:006] Lo! those who disbelieve, among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters, will abide in fire of hell. They are the worst of created beings. [098:007] (And) lo! those who believe and do good works are the best of created beings.
Sale: [098:001] The unbelievers among those to whom the scriptures were given, and among the idolaters, did not stagger, until the clear evidence had come unto them:[098:002] An Apostle from God, rehearsing unto them pure books of revelations; [098:003] wherein are contained right discourses. [098:004] Neither were they unto whom the scriptures were given divided among themselves, until after the clear evidence had come unto them. [098:005] And they were commanded no other in the scriptures than to worship God, exhibiting unto him the pure religion, and being orthodox; and to be constant at prayer, and to give alms: And this is the right religion. Muhammad Al-Hilali & Muhsin Khan: [098:001] Those who disbelieve from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and among Al-Mushrikoon, were not going to leave (their disbelief) until there came to them clear evidence.[098:002] A Messenger (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) from Allah, reciting (the Quran) purified pages (purified from Al-Batil (falsehood, etc.)). [098:003] Containing correct and straight laws from Allah. [098:004] And the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) differed not until after there came to them clear evidence. (i.e. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and whatever was revealed to him). [098:005] And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat: and that is the right religion. [098:006] Verily, those who disbelieve (in the religion of Islam, the Quran and Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and Al-Mushrikoon will abide in the Fire of Hell. They are the worst of creatures. [098:007] Verily, those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) including all obligations ordered by Islam) and do righteous good deeds, they are the best of creatures.
Palmer: [098:001] Those of the people of the Book and the idolaters who misbelieve did not fall off until there came to them the manifest sign,-[098:002] An apostle from God reading pure pages [098:003] wherein are right scriptures: [098:004] Nor did those who were given the Book divide into sects until after there came to them the manifest sign. [098:005] But they were not bidden aught but to worship God, being sincere in religion unto Him as Hanifs, and to be steadfast in prayer, and to give alms: for that is the standard religion. [098:006] Verily, those who disbelieve amongst the people of the Book and the idolaters shall be in the fire of hell, to dwell therein for aye; they are wretched creatures! [098:007] Verily, those who believe and act aright, they are the best of creatures;
Arberry: [098:001] The unbelievers of the People of the Book and the idolaters would never leave off; till the Clear Sign came to them,[098:002] a Messenger from God, reciting pages purified, [098:003] therein true Books. [098:004] And they scattered not, those that were given the Book, excepting after the Clear Sign came to them. [098:005] They were commanded only to serve God, making the religion His sincerely, men of pure faith, and to perform the prayer, and pay the alms -- that is the religion of the True. [098:006] The unbelievers of the People of the Book and the idolaters shall be in the Fire of Gehenna, therein dwelling forever; those are the worst of creatures. [098:007] But those who believe, and do righteous deeds, those are the best of creatures;
Khalifa: (why is he here?) [098:001] Those who disbelieved among the people of the scripture, as well as the idol worshipers, insist on their ways, despite the proof given to them.[098:002] A messenger from GOD is reciting to them sacred instructions. [098:003] In them there are valuable teachings. [098:004] In fact, those who received the scripture did not dispute until the proof was given to them. [098:005] All that was asked of them was to worship GOD, devoting the religion absolutely to Him alone, observe the contact prayers (Salat), and give the obligatory charity (Zakat). Such is the perfect religion. [098:006] Those who disbelieved among the people of the scripture, and the idol worshipers, have incurred the fire of Gehenna forever. They are the worst creatures. [098:007] Those who believed and led a righteous life are the best creatures.
Rodwell: [098:001] THE unbelievers among the people of the Book, and the Polytheists, did not waver, until the CLEAR EVIDENCE had come to them;[098:002] A messenger from God, reciting to them the pure pages [098:003] wherein are true Scriptures! [098:004] Neither were they to whom the Scriptures were given divided into sects, till after this clear evidence had reached them! [098:005] Yet was not aught enjoined on them but to worship God with sincere religion, sound in faith; and to observe prayer and pay the stated alms. For this is true religion. [098:006] But the unbelievers among the people of the Book, and among the Polytheists, shall go into the fire of Gehenna to abide therein for aye. Of all creatures are they the worst! [098:007] But they who believe and do the things that are right - these of all creatures are the best!
