[018:009] Or dost thou reflect that the Companions of the Cave and of the Inscription were wonders among Our Sign?

[018:010] Behold, the youths betook themselves to the Cave: they said, "Our Lord! bestow on us Mercy from Thyself, and dispose of our affair for us in the right way!"

[018:011] Then We draw (a veil) over their ears, for a number of years, in the Cave, (so that they heard not):

[018:012] Then We roused them, in order to test which of the two parties was best at calculating the term of years they had tarried!

[018:013] We relate to thee their story in truth: they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We advanced them in guidance:

[018:014] We gave strength to their hearts: Behold, they stood up and said: "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and of the earth: never shall we call upon any god other than Him: if we did, we should indeed have uttered an enormity!

[018:015] "These our people have taken for worship gods other than Him: why do they not bring forward an authority clear (and convincing) for what they do? Who doth more wrong than such as invent a falsehood against God?

[018:016] "When ye turn away from them and the things they worship other than God, betake yourselves to the Cave: Your Lord will shower His mercies on you and disposes of your affair towards comfort and ease."

[018:017] Thou wouldst have seen the sun, when it rose, declining to the right from their Cave, and when it set, turning away from them to the left, while they lay in the open space in the midst of the Cave. Such are among the Signs of God: He whom God, guides is rightly guided; but he whom God leaves to stray,- for him wilt thou find no protector to lead him to the Right Way.

[018:018] Thou wouldst have deemed them awake, whilst they were asleep, and We turned them on their right and on their left sides: their dog stretching forth his two fore-legs on the threshold: if thou hadst come up on to them, thou wouldst have certainly turned back from them in flight, and wouldst certainly have been filled with terror of them.

[018:019] Such (being their state), we raised them up (from sleep), that they might question each other. Said one of them, "How long have ye stayed (here)?" They said, "We have stayed (perhaps) a day, or part of a day." (At length) they (all) said, "God (alone) knows best how long ye have stayed here.... Now send ye then one of you with this money of yours to the town: let him find out which is the best food (to be had) and bring some to you, that (ye may) satisfy your hunger therewith: And let him behave with care and courtesy, and let him not inform any one about you.

[018:020] "For if they should come upon you, they would stone you or force you to return to their cult, and in that case ye would never attain prosperity."

[018:021] Thus did We make their case known to the people, that they might know that the promise of God is true, and that there can be no doubt about the Hour of Judgment. Behold, they dispute among themselves as to their affair. (Some) said, "Construct a building over them": Their Lord knows best about them: those who prevailed over their affair said, "Let us surely build a place of worship over them."

[018:022] (Some) say they were three, the dog being the fourth among them; (others) say they were five, the dog being the sixth,- doubtfully guessing at the unknown; (yet others) say they were seven, the dog being the eighth. Say thou: "My Lord knoweth best their number; It is but few that know their (real case)." Enter not, therefore, into controversies concerning them, except on a matter that is clear, nor consult any of them about (the affair of) the Sleepers.

[018:023] Nor say of anything, "I shall be sure to do so and so tomorrow"-

[018:024] Without adding, "So please God!" and call thy Lord to mind when thou forgettest, and say, "I hope that my Lord will guide me ever closer (even) than this to the right road."

[018:025] So they stayed in their Cave three hundred years, and (some) add nine (more)

[018:026] Say: "God knows best how long they stayed: with Him is (the knowledge of) the secrets of the heavens and the earth: how clearly He sees, how finely He hears (everything)! They have no protector other than Him; nor does He share His Command with any person whatsoever.

[018:027] And recite (and teach) what has been revealed to thee of the Book of thy Lord: none can change His Words, and none wilt thou find as a refuge other than Him.

[018:009] Do you regard the companions of the cave and the inscription tablet (upon the cave) as exceptional marvels among Our signs?

[018:010] Those young men sought refuge in the cave and said, “Our Lord! By Your grace, grant us Your mercy and resolve our affairs suitably!”

[018:011] So, in that cave We lulled them to sleep for many years!

[018:012] Then, (many years later) We awakened them so We may know which of their groups correctly estimates the length of their stay in the cave.

[018:013] We narrate to you their true tale. The young men had faith in their Lord, and We enhanced them in guidance.

[018:014] We fortified their hearts because they stood firm and said, “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth! We shall call upon no god other than Him. Else, we shall have severely exceeded the bounds.”

[018:015] “This nation of ours accepts gods other than Him. Why do they not give a valid justification in support? Who then, is more evil than the one inventing lies about Allah?”

[018:016] “Seek refuge in that cave, now that you have parted company with them, as well as those they worship other than Allah. Your Lord will shower His mercy upon you and will attend to your needs and comforts.”

[018:017] (Had you been there) you would see (the rays of) the sun _ as it rises and sets _ falling obliquely across the right of the cave and turning away past its left, while the men lay in the midst (of the cave). These are the signs of Allah. The rightly guided is the one whom Allah guides. You will not find any patron to guide the one who is led astray.

[018:018] You would think they were awake, although they were asleep. We rolled them on their sides _ right and left. With outstretched limbs, their dog lay close to the entrance (of the cave). Had you just caught a glimpse of them, you would be struck with terror and you would turn around and flee.

[018:019] Thus We awakened them so they may question one another. One of them asked, “How long did we stay (here)?” Others responded, “A day! Perhaps less!” They all said, “Our Lord alone knows how long we stayed (in this cave). Let us send one of us to the town with this coin. With it, let him buy and bring to us the best, most wholesome food. And let him proceed with caution. Let no one know about you!”

[018:020] “If they overcome you they may stone you to death, or compel you to rejoin their faith. In the later case, you will never ever be successful.”

[018:021] In that miraculous manner, We made them (the people) stumble upon (that cave). So that they would know for sure that Allah’s promise is real, and that there is no doubt about the hour (of judgment). But instead, they carried on their dispute and said, “Let us build a monument over them. Only their Lord knows the truth about them!” Those who were in charge said, “We shall definitely turn the site into a place of worship.”

[018:022] They will say, “(That they were) three, the fourth was their dog.” Others also conjecture (and put the figure at) five, counting the dog six. Still others say, “Seven! Their dog was the eighth.” Say, “My Lord knows their true number! Others know only very little.” So, do not discuss that about them except cursorily, nor inquire anyone about them.

[018:023] And regarding anything, do not say, “I will do that tomorrow.”

[018:024] (Rather add), “If Allah pleases!” (Insha Allah)! Should you forget this, then remember your Lord (when you recall) and say, “Perhaps, my Lord will lead me towards that which is more appropriate, and a sensible conduct.”

[018:025] They stayed in that cave for three centuries, and nine more years.

[018:026] And say, “Allah knows exactly how long they stayed! To Him belong the secrets of the heavens and the earth! He hears (everything) clearly, and He sees (everything) plainly. They have no patrons besides Him, and He includes none in His decisions and domain.”

[018:027] And recite (without modification) the revelation from the book of your Lord. No one may change the words of your Lord! (If you did) you will not find any safe place from Him.

[018:009] Am hasibta anna as-haba alkahfi waalrraqeemi kanoo min ayatina AAajaban

[018:010] Ith awa alfityatu ila alkahfi faqaloo rabbana atina min ladunka rahmatan wahayyi/ lana min amrina rashadan

[018:011] Fadarabna AAala athanihim fee alkahfi sineena AAadadan

[018:012] Thumma baAAathnahum linaAAlama ayyu alhizbayni ahsa lima labithoo amadan

[018:013] Nahnu naqussu AAalayka nabaahum bialhaqqi innahum fityatun amanoo birabbihim wazidnahum hudan

[018:014] Warabatna AAala quloobihim ith qamoo faqaloo rabbuna rabbu alssamawati waal-ardi lan nadAAuwa min doonihi ilahan laqad qulna ithan shatatan

[018:015] Haola-i qawmuna ittakhathoo min doonihi alihatan lawla ya/toona AAalayhim bisultanin bayyinin faman athlamu mimmani iftara AAala Allahi kathiban

[018:016] Wa-ithi iAAtazaltumoohum wama yaAAbudoona illa Allaha fa/woo ila alkahfi yanshur lakum rabbukum min rahmatihi wayuhayyi/ lakum min amrikum mirfaqan

[018:017] Watara alshshamsa itha talaAAat tazawaru AAan kahfihim thata alyameeni wa-itha gharabat taqriduhum thata alshshimali wahum fee fajwatin minhu thalika min ayati Allahi man yahdi Allahu fahuwa almuhtadi waman yudlil falan tajida lahu waliyyan murshidan

[018:018] Watahsabuhum ayqathan wahum ruqoodun wanuqallibuhum thata alyameeni wathata alshshimali wakalbuhum basitun thiraAAayhi bialwaseedi lawi ittalaAAta AAalayhim lawallayta minhum firaran walamuli/ta minhum ruAAban

[018:019] Wakathalika baAAathnahum liyatasaaloo baynahum qala qa-ilun minhum kam labithtum qaloo labithna yawman aw baAAda yawmin qaloo rabbukum aAAlamu bima labithtum faibAAathoo ahadakum biwariqikum hathihi ila almadeenati falyanthur ayyuha azka taAAaman falya/tikum birizqin minhu walyatalattaf wala yushAAiranna bikum ahadan

[018:020] Innahum in yathharoo AAalaykum yarjumookum aw yuAAeedookum fee millatihim walan tuflihoo ithan abadan

[018:021] Wakathalika aAAtharna AAalayhim liyaAAlamoo anna waAAda Allahi haqqun waanna alsaAAata la rayba feeha ith yatanazaAAoona baynahum amrahum faqaloo ibnoo AAalayhim bunyanan rabbuhum aAAlamu bihim qala allatheena ghalaboo AAala amrihim lanattakhithanna AAalayhim masjidan

[018:022] Sayaqooloona thalathatun rabiAAuhum kalbuhum wayaqooloona khamsatun sadisuhum kalbuhum rajman bialghaybi wayaqooloona sabAAatun wathaminuhum kalbuhum qul rabbee aAAlamu biAAiddatihim ma yaAAlamuhum illa qaleelun fala tumari feehim illa miraan thahiran wala tastafti feehim minhum ahadan

[018:023] Wala taqoolanna lishay-in innee faAAilun thalika ghadan

[018:024] Illa an yashaa Allahu waothkur rabbaka itha naseeta waqul AAasa an yahdiyani rabbee li-aqraba min hatha rashadan

[018:025] Walabithoo fee kahfihim thalatha mi-atin sineena waizdadoo tisAAan

[018:026] Quli Allahu aAAlamu bima labithoo lahu ghaybu alssamawati waal-ardi absir bihi waasmiAA ma lahum min doonihi min waliyyin wala yushriku fee hukmihi ahadan

[018:027] Waotlu ma oohiya ilayka min kitabi rabbika la mubaddila likalimatihi walan tajida min doonihi multahadan

‏18:9 ام حسبت ان اصحاب الكهف والرقيم كانوا من اياتنا عجبا

‏18:10 اذ اوى الفتية الى الكهف فقالوا ربنا اتنا من لدنك رحمة وهيئ لنا من امرنا رشدا

‏18:11 فضربنا على اذانهم في الكهف سنين عددا

‏18:12 ثم بعثناهم لنعلم اي الحزبين احصى لما لبثوا امدا

‏18:13 نحن نقص عليك نباهم بالحق انهم فتية امنوا بربهم وزدناهم هدى

‏18:14 وربطنا على قلوبهم اذ قاموا فقالوا ربنا رب السماوات والارض لن ندعوا من دونه الها لقد قلنا اذا شططا

‏18:15 هؤلاء قومنا اتخذوا من دونه الهة لولاياتون عليهم بسلطان بين فمن اظلم ممن افترى على الله كذبا

‏18:16 واذا اعتزلتموهم ومايعبدون الا الله فاووا الى الكهف ينشر لكم ربكم من رحمته ويهيئ لكم من امركم مرفقا

‏18:17 وترى الشمس اذا طلعت تزاور عن كهفهم ذات اليمين واذا غربت تقرضهم ذات الشمال وهم في فجوة منه ذلك من ايات الله من يهد الله فهو المهتد ومن يضلل فلن تجد له وليا مرشدا

‏18:18 وتحسبهم ايقاظا وهم رقود ونقلبهم ذات اليمين وذات الشمال وكلبهم باسط ذراعيه بالوصيد لو اطلعت عليهم لوليت منهم فرارا ولملئت منهم رعبا

‏18:19 وكذلك بعثناهم ليتساءلوا بينهم قال قائل منهم كم لبثتم قالوا لبثنا يوما او بعض يوم قالوا ربكم اعلم بما لبثتم فابعثوا احدكم بورقكم هذه الى المدينة فلينظر ايها ازكى طعاما فلياتكم برزق منه وليتلطف ولايشعرن بكم احدا

‏18:20 انهم ان يظهروا عليكم يرجموكم او يعيدوكم في ملتهم ولن تفلحوا اذا ابدا

‏18:21 وكذلك اعثرنا عليهم ليعلموا ان وعد الله حق وان الساعة لاريب فيها اذ يتنازعون بينهم امرهم فقالوا ابنوا عليهم بنيانا ربهم اعلم بهم قال الذين غلبوا على امرهم لنتخذن عليهم مسجدا

‏18:22 سيقولون ثلاثة رابعهم كلبهم ويقولون خمسة سادسهم كلبهم رجما بالغيب ويقولون سبعة وثامنهم كلبهم قل ربي اعلم بعدتهم مايعلمهم الا قليل فلا تمار فيهم الا مراء ظاهرا ولاتستفت فيهم منهم احدا

‏18:23 ولاتقولن لشئ اني فاعل ذلك غدا

‏18:24 الا ان يشاء الله واذكر ربك اذا نسيت وقل عسى ان يهدين ربي لاقرب من هذا رشدا

‏18:25 ولبثوا في كهفهم ثلاث مئة سنين وازدادوا تسعا

‏18:26 قل الله اعلم بما لبثوا له غيب السماوات والارض ابصربه واسمع مالهم من دونه من ولي ولايشرك في حكمه احدا

‏18:27 واتل مااوحي اليك من كتاب ربك لامبدل لكلماته ولن تجد من دونه ملتحدا

[018:009] Dost thou think that the Companions of the Cave and the Inscription were a wonder among Our Signs ?

[018:010] When the young men betook themselves to the Cave for refuge they said, `Our Lord, bestow on us mercy from Thyself, and furnish us with right guidance in our affair.'

[018:011] So WE prevented them from hearing in the Cave for a number of years.

[018:012] Then WE raised them up that WE might know which of the two parties would preserve a better reckoning of the time that they tarried.

[018:013] WE will relate to thee the story with truth. They were young men who believed in their Lord and WE increased them in guidance.

[018:014] And WE strengthened their hearts when they stood up and said, `Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never shall we call on any god beside HIM; for if we did so, we would utter a preposterous thing;

[018:015] `These, our people, have taken for worship other gods beside HIM. Wherefore do they not bring a clear authority regarding them ? And who is more unjust than he who invents a lie concerning ALLAH ?

[018:016] `And now when you have withdrawn from them and from that which they worship beside ALLAH, then seek refuge in the cave; your Lord will unfold to you HIS mercy and will provide for you some easy and comfortable course in this affair of yours.'

[018:017] And thou couldst see the sun, as it rose, move away from their Cave on the right, and when it set, turn away from them on the left; and they were in a spacious hollow thereof. This is among the Signs of ALLAH. He whom ALLAH guides is alone rightly guided; but he whom HE leaves to go astray, for him thou wilt find no helper or guide.

[018:018] Thou mightest deem them awake, whilst they are asleep; and WE shall cause them to turn over to the right and to the left; their dog stretching out its forelegs on the threshold. If thou hadst had a look at them, thou wouldst surely be filled with awe of them.

[018:019] And so WE raised them up that they might question one another. One of them said, `How long have you tarried ?' They said, `We have tarried a day or part of a day.' Others said, `Your Lord knows best the time you have tarried. Now send one of you with these silver coins of yours to the city; and let him see which of the inhabitants has the purest food, and let him bring you provisions thereof. And let him be courteous but let him not inform anyone about you;

[018:020] `For, if they should prevail against you, they would stone you or force you to return to their religion and then you will never prosper.'

[018:021] And thus did WE disclose them to the people that they might know that the promise of ALLAH was true, and that, as to the promised Hour, there was no doubt about it. And call to mind the time when people disputed among themselves concerning them, and said to each other, `Build over them a building.' Their Lord knew them best. `We will, surely, build a place of worship over them.'

[018:022] Some say, `They were three, the fourth of them was their dog;' and others say, `They were five, the sixth of them was their dog,' guessing at random. And yet others say, `They were seven, the eighth of them was their dog.' Say, `My Lord knows best their correct number. None knows them except a few.' So argue not concerning them except with unanswerable arguments, nor seek information concerning them from anyone of them.

[018:023] And say not of anything, `I shall do that tomorrow,'

[018:024] Unless ALLAH should will. And remember thy Lord when thou forgetest and say, `I hope my Lord will guide me to what is even nearer than this to the right path.'

[018:025] And they stayed in their Cave three hundred years and to that they added nine.

[018:026] Say, `ALLAH knows best how long they tarried.' To HIM belong the secrets of the heavens and the earth. How Seeing is HE, and how Hearing ! They have no helper beside HIM, and HE does not let anyone share in HIS judgment.

[018:027] And recite what has been revealed to thee of the Book of thy Lord. There is none who can change HIS words, and thou wilt find no refuge beside HIM.

[018:009] Or, do you think that the Fellows of the Cave and the Inscription were of Our wonderful signs?

[018:010] When the youths sought refuge in the cave, they said: Our Lord! grant us mercy from Thee, and provide for us a right course in our affair.

[018:011] So We prevented them from hearing in the cave for a number of years.

[018:012] Then We raised them up that We might know which of the two parties was best able to compute the time for which they remained.

[018:013] We relate to you their story with the truth; surely they were youths who believed in their Lord and We increased them in guidance.

[018:014] And We strengthened their hearts with patience, when they stood up and said: Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth; we will by no means call upon any god besides Him, for then indeed we should have said an extravagant thing.

[018:015] These our people have taken gods besides Him; why do they not produce any clear authority in their support? Who is then more unjust than he who forges a lie against Allah?

[018:016] And when you forsake them and what they worship save Allah, betake yourselves for refuge to the cave; your Lord will extend to you largely of His mercy and provide for you a profitable course in your affair.

[018:017] And you might see the sun when it rose, decline from their cave towards the right hand, and when it set, leave them behind on the left while they were in a wide space thereof. This is of the signs of Allah; whomsoever Allah guides, he is the rightly guided one, and whomsoever He causes to err, you shall not find for him any friend to lead (him) aright.

[018:018] And you might think them awake while they were asleep and We turned them about to the right and to the left, while their dog (lay) outstretching its paws at the entrance; if you looked at them you would certainly turn back from them in flight, and you would certainly be filled with awe because of them.

[018:019] And thus did We rouse them that they might question each other. A speaker among them said: How long have you tarried? They said: We have tarried for a day or a part of a day. (Others) said: Your Lord knows best how long you have tarried. Now send one of you with this silver (coin) of yours to the city, then let him see which of them has purest food, so let him bring you provision from it, and let him behave with gentleness, and by no means make your case known to any one:

[018:020] For surely if they prevail against you they would stone you to death or force you back to their religion, and then you will never succeed.

[018:021] And thus did We make (men) to get knowledge of them that they might know that Allah's promise is true and that as for the hour there is no doubt about it. When they disputed among themselves about their affair and said: Erect an edifice over them -- their Lord best knows them. Those who prevailed in their affair said: We will certainly raise a masjid over them.

[018:022] (Some) say: (They are) three, the fourth of them being their dog; and (others) say: Five, the sixth of them being their dog, making conjectures at what is unknown; and (others yet) say: Seven, and the eighth of them is their dog. Say: My Lord best knows their number, none knows them but a few; therefore contend not in the matter of them but with an outward contention, and do not question concerning them any of them.

[018:023] And do not say of anything: Surely I will do it tomorrow,

[018:024] Unless Allah pleases; and remember your Lord when you forget and say: Maybe my Lord will guide me to a nearer course to the right than this.

[018:025] And they remained in their cave three hundred years and (some) add (another) nine.

[018:026] Say: Allah knows best how long they remained; to Him are (known) the unseen things of the heavens and the earth; how clear His sight and how clear His hearing! There is none to be a guardian for them besides Him, and He does not make any one His associate in His Judgment.

[018:027] And recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord, there is none who can alter His words; and you shall not find any refuge besides Him.

Pickthall:

[018:009] Or deemest thou that the People of the Cave and the Inscription are a wonder among Our portents ?

[018:010] When the young men fled for refuge to the Cave and said: Our Lord! Give us mercy from Thy presence, and shape for us right conduct in our plight.

[018:011] Then We sealed up their hearing in the Cave for a number of years.

[018:012] And afterward We raised them up that We might know which of the two parties would best calculate the time that they had tarried.

[018:013] We narrate unto thee their story with truth. Lo! they were young men who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.

[018:014] And We made firm their hearts when they stood forth and said: Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We cry unto no God beside Him, for then should we utter an enormity.

[018:015] These, our people, have chosen (other) gods beside Him though they bring no clear warrant (vouchsafed) to them. And who doth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah ?

[018:016] And when ye withdraw from them and that which they worship except Allah, then seek refuge in the Cave; your Lord will spread for you of His mercy and will prepare for you a pillow in your plight.

[018:017] And thou mightest have seen the sun when it rose move away from their cave to the right, and when it set go past them on the left, and they were in the cleft thereof. That was (one) of the portents of Allah. He whom Allah guideth, he indeed is led aright, and he whom He sendeth astray, for him thou wilt not find a guiding friend.

[018:018] And thou wouldst have deemed them waking though they were asleep, and We caused them to turn over to the right and the left, and their dog stretching out his paws on the threshold. If thou hadst observed them closely thou hadst assuredly turned away from them in flight, and hadst been filled with awe of them.

[018:019] And in like manner We awakened them that they might question one another. A speaker from among them said: How long have ye tarried ? They said: We have tarried a day or some part of a day, (Others) said: Your Lord best knoweth what ye have tarried. Now send one of you with this your silver coin unto the city, and let him see what food is purest there and bring you a supply thereof. Let him be courteous and let no man know of you.

[018:020] For they, if they should come to know of you, will stone you or turn you back to their religion; then ye will never prosper.

[018:021] And in like manner We disclosed them (to the people of the city) that they might know that the promise of Allah is true, and that, as for the Hour, there is no doubt concerning it. When (the people of the city) disputed of their case among themselves, they said: Build over them a building; their Lord knoweth best concerning them. Those who won their point said: We verily shall build a place of worship over them.

[018:022] (Some) will say: They were three, their dog the fourth, and (some) say: Five, their dog the sixth, guessing at random; and (some) say: Seven, and their dog the eighth. Say (O Muhammad): My Lord is Best Aware of their number. None knoweth them save a few. So contend not concerning them except with an outward contending, and ask not any of them to pronounce concerning them.

[018:023] And say not of anything: Lo! I shall do that tomorrow,

[018:024] Except if Allah will. And remember thy Lord when thou forgettest, and say: It may be that my Lord guideth me unto a nearer way of truth than this.

[018:025] And (it is said) they tarried in their Cave three hundred years and add nine.

[018:026] Say: Allah is Best Aware how long they tarried. His is the Invisible of the heavens and the earth. How clear of sight is He and keen of hearing! They have no protecting friend beside Him, and He maketh none to share in His government.

[018:027] And recite that which hath been revealed unto thee of the Scripture of thy Lord. There is none who can change His words, and thou wilt find no refuge beside Him.

[018:009] Dost thou consider that the companions of the cave, and Al Rakim, were one of our signs, and a great miracle?

[018:010] When the young men took refuge in the cave, they said, O Lord, grant us mercy from before thee, and dispose our business for us to a right issue.

[018:011] Wherefore We struck their ears with deafness, so that they slept without disturbance in the cave for a great number of years:

[018:012] Then We awaked them, that We might know which of the two parties was more exact in computing the space which they had remainded there.

[018:013] We will relate unto thee their history with truth. Verily they were young men who had believed in their Lord; and We had abundantly directed them:

[018:014] And We fortified their hearts with constancy when they stood before the tyrant; and they said, our Lord is the Lord of heaven and earth: We will by no means call on any god besides Him; for then should we surely utter an extravagance.

[018:015] These our fellow people have taken other gods, besides Him; although they bring no demonstrative argument for them: And who is more unjust than he who deviseth a lie concerning God?

[018:016] And they said the one to the other, when ye shall separate yourselves from them, and from the deities which they worship, except God, fly into the cave: Your Lord will pour his mercy on you abundantly, and will dispose your business for you to advantage.

[018:017] And thou mightest have seen the sun, when it had risen, to decline from their cave towards the right hand; and when it went down, to leave them on the left hand: And they were in the spacious part of the cave. This was one of the signs of God. Whomsoever God shall direct, he shall be rightly directed; and whomsoever He shall cause to err, thou shalt not find any to defend or to direct.

[018:018] And thou wouldst have judged them to have been awake, while they were sleeping; and We caused them to turn themselves to the right hand, and to the left. And their dog stretched forth his fore-legs in the mouth of the cave: If thou hadst come suddenly upon them, verily thou wouldest have turned thy back and fled from them, and thou wouldest have been filled with fear at the sight of them.

[018:019] And so We awaked them from their sleep, that they might ask questions of one another. One of them spake and said, how long have ye tarried here? They answered, we have tarried a day, or part of a day. The others said, your Lord, best knoweth the time ye have tarried: And now send one of you with this your money into the city, and let him see which of its inhabitants hath the best and cheapest food, and let him bring you provision from him; and let him behave circumspectly, and not discover you to any one.

[018:020] Verily, if they come up against you, they will stone you, or force you to return to their religion; and then shall ye not prosper for ever.

[018:021] And so We made their people acquainted with what had happened to them; that they might know that the promise of God is true, and that there is no doubt of the last hour; when they disputed among themselves concerning their matter. And they said, erect a building over them: Their Lord best knoweth their condition. Those who prevailed in their affair answered, we will surely build a chappel over them.

[018:022] Some say, the sleepers were three; and their dog was the fourth: And others say, they were five; and their dog was the sixth; guessing at a secret matter: And others say, they were seven; and their dog was the eighth. Say, my Lord best knoweth their number: None shall know them, except a few. Wherefore dispute not concerning them, unless with a clear disputation, according to what hath been revealed unto thee: And ask not any of the Christians concerning them.

[018:023] Say not of any matter, I will surely do this to morrow;

[018:024] unless thou add, if God please. And remember thy Lord, when thou forgettest, and say, my Lord is able to direct me with ease, that I may draw near unto the truth of this matter rightly.

[018:025] And they remained in their cave three hundred years, and nine years over.

[018:026] Say, God best knoweth how long they continued there: Unto Him are the secrets of heaven and earth known; do thou make him to see and to hear. The inhabitants thereof have no protector besides Him; neither doth He suffer nay one to have a share in the establishment or knowledge of his decree.

[018:027] Read that which hath been revealed unto thee, of the book of thy Lord, without presuming to make any change therein: There is none who hath power to change his words; and thou shalt not find any to fly to, besides Him, if thou attempt it.

Muhammad Al-Hilali & Muhsin Khan:

[018:009] Do you think that the people of the Cave and the Inscription (the news or the names of the people of the Cave) were a wonder among Our Signs?

[018:010] (Remember) when the young men fled for refuge (from their disbelieving folk) to the Cave, they said: "Our Lord! Bestow on us mercy from Yourself, and facilitate for us our affair in the right way!"

[018:011] Therefore We covered up their (sense of) hearing (causing them, to go in deep sleep) in the Cave for a number of years.

[018:012] Then We raised them up (from their sleep), that We might test which of the two parties was best at calculating the time period that they had tarried.

[018:013] We narrate unto you (O Muhammad SAW) their story with truth: Truly! They were young men who believed in their Lord (Allah), and We increased them in guidance.

[018:014] And We made their hearts firm and strong (with the light of Faith in Allah and bestowed upon them patience to bear the separation of their kith and kin and dwellings, etc.) when they stood up and said: "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, never shall we call upon any ilah (god) other than Him; if we did, we should indeed have uttered an enormity in disbelief.

[018:015] "These our people have taken for worship aliha (gods) other than Him (Allah). Why do they not bring for them a clear authority? And who does more wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah.

[018:016] (The young men said to one another): "And when you withdraw from them, and that which they worship, except Allah, then seek refuge in the Cave, your Lord will open a way for you from His Mercy and will make easy for you your affair (i.e. will give you what you will need of provision, dwelling, etc.)."

[018:017] And you might have seen the sun, when it rose, declining to the right from their Cave, and when it set, turning away from them to the left, while they lay in the midst of the Cave. That is (one) of the Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) of Allah. He whom Allah guides, is rightly guided; but he whom He sends astray, for him you will find no Walee (guiding friend) to lead him (to the right Path).

[018:018] And you would have thought them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them on their right and on their left sides, and their dog stretching forth his two forelegs at the entrance (of the Cave or in the space near to the entrance of the Cave (as a guard at the gate)). Had you looked at them, you would certainly have turned back from them in flight, and would certainly have been filled with awe of them.

[018:019] Likewise, We awakened them (from their long deep sleep) that they might question one another. A speaker from among them said: "How long have you stayed (here)?" They said: "We have stayed (perhaps) a day or part of a day." They said: "Your Lord (Alone) knows best how long you have stayed (here). So send one of you with this silver coin of yours to the town, and let him find out which is the good lawful food, and bring some of that to you. And let him be careful and let no man know of you.

[018:020] "For if they come to know of you, they will stone you (to death or abuse and harm you) or turn you back to their religion, and in that case you will never be successful."

[018:021] And thus We made their case known to the people, that they might know that the Promise of Allah is true, and that there can be no doubt about the Hour. (Remember) when they (the people of the city) disputed among themselves about their case, they said: "Construct a building over them, their Lord knows best about them," (then) those who won their point said (most probably the disbelievers): "We verily shall build a place of worship over them."

[018:022] (Some) say they were three, the dog being the fourth among them; (others) say they were five, the dog being the sixth, guessing at the unseen; (yet others) say they were seven, the dog being the eighth. Say (O Muhammad SAW): "My Lord knows best their number; none knows them but a few." So debate not (about their number, etc.) except with the clear proof (which We have revealed to you). And consult not any of them (people of the Scripture, Jews and Christians) about (the affair of) the people of the Cave.

[018:023] And never say of anything, "I shall do such and such thing tomorrow."

[018:024] Except (with the saying), "If Allah will!" And remember your Lord when you forget and say: "It may be that my Lord guides me unto a nearer way of truth than this."

[018:025] And they stayed in their Cave three hundred (solar) years, and add nine (for lunar years).

[018:026] Say: "Allah knows best how long they stayed. With Him is (the knowledge of) the unseen of the heavens and the earth. How clearly He sees, and hears (everything)! They have no Walee (Helper, Disposer of affairs, Protector, etc.) other than Him, and He makes none to share in His Decision and His Rule."

[018:027] And recite what has been revealed to you (O Muhammad SAW) of the Book (the Quran) of your Lord (i.e. recite it, understand and follow its teachings and act on its orders and preach it to men). None can change His Words, and none will you find as a refuge other than Him.

Palmer:

[018:009] Hast thou reckoned that the Fellows of the Cave and Er-raqim were a wonder amongst our signs?'

[018:010] When the youths resorted to the cave and said, 'O our Lord! bring us mercy from Thee, and dispose for us our affair aright!'

[018:011] And we struck their ears (with deafness) in the cave for a number of years.

[018:012] Then we raised them up again, that we might know which of the two crews could best calculate the time of their tarrying.

[018:013] We will narrate to thee their story in truth. Verily, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and we added to their guidance,

[018:014] and we braced up their hearts, when they stood up and said, 'Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, we will not call upon any god beside Him, for then we should have said an extravagant thing.

[018:015] These people of ours have taken to other gods beside Him. Though they do not bring any manifest authority for them. And who is more unjust than he who forges against God a lie?

[018:016] 'So when ye have gone apart from them and what they serve other than God, then resort ye to the cave. Our Lord will unfold His mercy to you, and will dispose for you your affair advantageously.'

[018:017] And thou mightst have seen the sun when it rose decline from their cave towards the right hand, and when it set leave them on the left hand, while they were in the spacious part thereof. That is one of the signs of God. Whom God guides he is guided indeed, and whom He leads astray thou shalt surely find for him no patron to guide aright.

[018:018] Thou mightst have reckoned them waking though they were sleeping, as we turned them towards the right and towards the left; and their dog spreading out his fore-paws on the threshold. Hadst thou come suddenly upon them thou wouldst surely have turned and fled away from them, and wouldst surely have been filled by them with dread.

[018:019] Thus did we raise them up that they might question each other. Spake a speaker amongst them, 'How long have ye tarried?' They said, 'We have tarried a day or part of a day.' They said, 'Your Lord knows best your tarrying; so send one of you with this coin of yours to the city, and let him look which of them has purest food, and let him bring you provision thereof; and let him be subtle and not let any one perceive you.

[018:020] Verily, they - should they perceive you - would stone you, or would force you back again unto their faith, and ye would never prosper then.'

[018:021] Thus did we make their people acquainted with their story, that they might know that God's promise is true; and that the Hour, there is no doubt concerning it. When they disputed amongst themselves concerning their affair, and said, 'Build a building over them, their Lord knows best about them;' and those who prevailed in their affair said, 'We will surely make a mosque over them.'

[018:022] They will say, 'Three, and the fourth of them was their dog:' and they will say, 'Five, and the sixth of them was their dog:' guessing at the unseen: and they will say, 'Seven, and the eighth of them was their dog.' Say, 'My Lord knows best the number of them; none knows them but few.' Dispute not therefore concerning them save with a plain disputation, and ask not any one of them concerning them.

[018:023] And never say of anything, 'Verily, I am going to do that to-morrow,'

[018:024] except 'if God please;' and remember thy Lord when thou hast forgotten, and say,' It may be that my Lord will guide me to what is nearer to the right than this.'

[018:025] They tarried in their cave three hundred years and nine more.

[018:026] Say, 'God knows best of their tarrying. His are the unseen things of the heavens and the earth - He can see! and hear!' They have no patron beside Him, nor does He let any one share in His judgment.

[018:027] So, recite what thou art inspired with of the Book of thy Lord; there is no changing His words; nor shalt thou ever find a refuge beside Him;

Arberry:

[018:009] Or dost thou think the Men of the Cave and Er-Rakeem were among Our signs a wonder?

[018:010] When the youths took refuge in the Cave saying, 'Our lord, give us mercy from Thee, and furnish us with rectitude in our affair.'

[018:011] Then We smote their ears many years in the Cave.

[018:012] Afterwards. We raised them up again, that We might know which of the two parties would better calculate the while they had tarried.

[018:013] We will relate to thee their tidings truly. They were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.

[018:014] And We strengthened their hearts, when they stood up and said, 'Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and earth; we will not call upon any god, apart from Him, or then we had spoken outrage.

[018:015] These our people have taken to them other gods, apart from Him. Ah, if only they would bring some clear authority regarding them! But who does greater evil than he who forges against God a lie?

[018:016] So, when you have gone apart from them and that they serve, excepting God, take refuge in the Cave, and your Lord will unfold to you of His mercy, and will furnish -- you with a gentle issue of your affair.'

[018:017] And thou mightest have seen the sun, when it rose, inclining from their Cave towards the right, and, when it set, passing them by on the left, while they were in a broad fissure of the Cave. That was one of God's signs; whomsoever God guides, he is rightly guided, and whomsoever He leads astray, thou wilt not find for him a protector to direct.

[018:018] Thou wouldst have thought them awake, as they lay sleeping, while We turned them now to the right, now to the left,' and their dog 'stretching its paws on the threshold. Hadst thou observed them surely thou wouldst have turned thy back on them in flight, and been filled with terror of them.

[018:019] And even so We raised them up again that they might question one another. One of them said, 'How long have you tarried?' They said, 'We have tarried a day, or part of a day.' They said, 'Your Lord knows very well how long you have tarried. Now send one of you forth with this silver to the city, and let him look for which of them has purest food, and bring you provision thereof; let him be courteous, and apprise no man of you.

[018:020] If they should get knowledge of you they will stone you, or restore you to their creed, then you will not prosper ever.

[018:021] And even so We made them stumble upon them, that they might know that God's promise is true, and that the Hour -- there is no doubt of it. When they were contending among themselves of their affair then they said, 'Build over them a building; their Lord knows of them very well.' Said those who prevailed over their affair, 'We will raise over them a place of worship.'

[018:022] (They will say, 'Three; and 'their dog was the fourth of them.' They will say, 'Five; and their dog was the sixth of them, guessing at the Unseen. They will say, 'Seven; and their dog was the eighth of them.' Say: 'My Lord knows very well their number, and none knows them, except a few.' So do not dispute with them, except in outward disputation, and ask not any of them for a pronouncement on them.

[018:023] And do not say, regarding anything, 'I am going to do that tomorrow,'

[018:024] but only, 'If God will'; and mention thy Lord, when thou forgettest, and say, 'It may be that my Lord will guide me unto something nearer to rectitude than this.')

[018:025] And they tarried in the Cave three hundred years, and to that they added nine more.

[018:026] Say: 'God knows very well how long they tarried. To Him belongs the Unseen in the heavens and in the earth. How well He sees! How well He hears! They have no protector, apart from Him, and He associates in His government no one.'

[018:027] Recite what has been revealed to thee of the Book of thy Lord; no man can change His words. Apart from Him, thou wilt find no refuge.

Khalifa: (why is he here?)

[018:009] Why else do you think we are telling you about the people of the cave, and the numbers connected with them? They are among our wondrous signs.

[018:010] When the youths took refuge in the cave, they said, "Our Lord, shower us with Your mercy, and bless our affairs with Your guidance."

[018:011] We then sealed their ears in the cave for a predetermined number of years.

[018:012] Then we resurrected them to see which of the two parties could count the duration of their stay therein.

[018:013] We narrate to you their history, truthfully. They were youths who believed in their Lord, and we increased their guidance.

[018:014] We strengthened their hearts when they stood up and proclaimed: "Our only Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will never worship any other god beside Him. Otherwise, we would be far astray.

[018:015] "Here are our people setting up gods beside Him. If only they could provide any proof to support their stand! Who is more evil than the one who fabricates lies and attributes them to GOD?

[018:016] "Since you wish to avoid them, and their worshipping of other than GOD, let us take refuge in the cave. May your Lord shower you with His mercy and direct you to the right decision."

[018:017] You could see the sun when it rose coming from the right side of their cave, and when it set, it shone on them from the left, as they slept in the hollow thereof. This is one of GOD's portents. Whomever GOD guides is the truly guided one, and whomever He sends astray, you will not find for him a guiding teacher.

[018:018] You would think that they were awake, when they were in fact asleep. We turned them to the right side and the left side, while their dog stretched his arms in their midst. Had you looked at them, you would have fled from them, stricken with terror.

[018:019] When we resurrected them, they asked each other, "How long have you been here?" "We have been here one day or part of the day," they answered. "Your Lord knows best how long we stayed here, so let us send one of us with this money to the city. Let him fetch the cleanest food, and buy some for us. Let him keep a low profile, and attract no attention.

[018:020] "If they discover you, they will stone you, or force you to revert to their religion, then you can never succeed."

[018:021] We caused them to be discovered, to let everyone know that GOD's promise is true, and to remove all doubt concerning the end of the world. The people then disputed among themselves regarding them. Some said, "Let us build a building around them." Their Lord is the best knower about them. Those who prevailed said, "We will build a place of worship around them."

[018:022] Some would say, "They were three; their dog being the fourth," while others would say, "Five; the sixth being their dog," as they guessed. Others said, "Seven," and the eighth was their dog. Say, "My Lord is the best knower of their number." Only a few knew the correct number. Therefore, do not argue with them; just go along with them. You need not consult anyone about this.

[018:023] You shall not say that you will do anything in the future,

[018:024] without saying, "GOD willing." If you forget to do this, you must immediately remember your Lord and say, "May my Lord guide me to do better next time."

[018:025] They stayed in their cave three hundred years, increased by nine.

[018:026] Say, "GOD is the best knower of how long they stayed there." He knows all secrets in the heavens and the earth. By His grace you can see; by His grace you can hear. There is none beside Him as Lord and Master, and He never permits any partners to share in His kingship.

[018:027] You shall recite what is revealed to you of your Lord's scripture. Nothing shall abrogate His words, and you shall not find any other source beside it.

Rodwell:

[018:009] Hast thou reflected that the Inmates of THE CAVE and of Al Rakim were on our wondrous signs?

[018:010] When the youths betook them to the cave they said, "O our Lord! grant us mercy from before thee, and order for us our affair aright."

[018:011] Then struck we upon their ears with deafness in the cave for many a year:

[018:012] Then we awaked them that we might know which of the two parties could best reckon the space of their abiding.

[018:013] We will relate to thee their tale with truth. They were youths who had believed in their Lord, and in guidance had we increased them;

[018:014] And we had made them stout of heart, when they stood up and said, "Our Lord is Lord of the Heavens and of the Earth: we will call on no other God than Him; for in that case we had said a thing outrageous.

[018:015] These our people have taken other gods beside Him, though they bring no clear proof for them; but, who more iniquitous than he who forgeth a lie of God?

[018:016] So when ye shall have separated you from them and from that which they worship beside God, then betake you to the cave: Your Lord will unfold his mercy to you, and will order your affairs for you for the best."

[018:017] And thou mightest have seen the sun when it arose, pass on the right of their cave, and when it set, leave them on the left, while they were in its spacious chamber. This is one of the signs of God. Guided indeed is he whom God guideth; but for him whom He misleadeth, thou shalt by no means find a patron, director.

[018:018] And thou wouldst have deemed them awake, though they were sleeping: and we turned them to the right and to the left. And in the entry lay their dog with paws outstretched. Hadst thou come suddenly upon them, thou wouldst surely have turned thy back on them in flight, and have been filled with fear at them.

[018:019] So we awaked them that they might question one another. Said one of them, "How long have ye tarried here?" They said, "We have tarried a day or part of day." They said, "Your Lord knoweth best how long ye have tarried: Send now one of you with this your coin into the city, and let him mark who therein hath purest food, and from him let him bring you a supply: and let him be courteous, and not discover you to any one.

[018:020] For they, if they find you out, will stone you or turn you back to their faith, and in that case it will fare ill with you for ever."

[018:021] And thus made we their adventure known to their fellow citizens, that they might learn that the promise of God is true, and that as to "the Hour" there is no doubt of its coming. When they disputed among themselves concerning what had befallen them, some said, "Build a building over them; their Lord knoweth best about them." Those who prevailed in the matter said, "A place of worship will we surely raise over them."

[018:022] Some say, "They were three; their dog the fourth:" others say, "Five; their dog the sixth," guessing at the secret: others say, "Seven; and their dog the eighth." SAY: My Lord best knoweth the number: none, save a few, shall know them.

[018:023] Therefore be clear in they discussions about them, and ask not any Christian concerning them.

[018:024] Say not thou of a thing, " I will surely do it to-morrow;" without , "If God will." And when thou hast forgotten, call thy Lord to mind; and say, "Haply my Lord will guide me, that I may come near to the truth of this story with correctness."

[018:025] And they tarried in their cave 300 years, and 9 years over.

[018:026] SAY: God best knoweth how long they tarried: With Him are the secrets of the Heavens and of the Earth: Look thou and hearken unto Him alone. Man hath no guardian but Him, and none may bear part in his judgments: -

[018:027] And publish what hath been revealed to thee of the Book of thy Lord - none may change his words, - and thou shalt find no refuge beside Him.
