Is Islam really against Art and Culture??

1. Classical and other good music, 2. Painting(including painting of living things. 3. Sculpture... are these really prohibited?? Why??

Allah said in Quran surah Maidah, verse 4:

Translation : Eng-Yusuf Ali

They ask thee what is lawful to them (as food): say: Lawful unto you are (all) things good and pure:

Those art form are good things basically. And it doesn't necessarily diver one from path of Allah.

Listening to Music is not allowed because it is Satanic, when you listen the music it attracts you and then all the day that Music will on your mind even when you are praying.

Famous Islamic Scholar Dr.Zakir Naik said,

Quote
Question: I have a doubt about playing of musical instruments. Is this an act
of Satan?

                                                 -Faiz-ullah-Khan, Jammu and Kashmir.

A. Prohibition of music is recorded in many authentic Ahadith.

 Narrated Abu Malik Al-Ashari:

"The Messenger (pbuh) of Allah (SWT) said, "Some people of my Ummah will drink wine, calling it by other than its real name, merriment will be made for them through the playing of musical instruments and the singing of lady singers. Allah will cleave the earth under them and turn others into monkeys and swines. [Ibn Ma'jah Vol.5 Hadith No.4020]

Narrated Abu Amir or Abu Malik Al Ashari that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection.[Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol.7 Hadith No.5590]

However, there are some Ahadith which indicate that it is permissible to beat the ‘daff’ i.e. the tambourine (which is open on one side and covered on the other).Music usually intoxicates a person and takes one away from the path of Allah (swt). Music engages a person’s mind and takes him/her away from the remembrance of his/her Creator and from realizing and focusing his/her attention on the purpose of his/her creation. In musical songs, most of the times the listeners even appreciate illogical, incorrect and blasphemous matter and content. A person will realize this when he starts pondering over the meaning of many Hindi and English songs, lyrics and ghazals. Here we find that it is because of music that the person’s mind is intoxicated and the person deviates from the straight path. And Allah Knows the Best.

Sorry but i don't know about Drawings, Paintings

SOME ISLAMIC RULES ABOUT ART........

Tattoo prohibited:
Muslim :: Book 24 : Hadith 5301
'Abdullah reported that Allah had cursed those women who tattooed and who have themselves tattooed, those who pluck hair from their faces and those who make spaces between their teeth for beautification changing what God has created.
Bukhari :: Book 7 :: Volume 72 :: Hadith 825
Narrated Ibn 'Umar :
I heard the Prophet saying, (or the Prophet said), "Allah has cursed the lady who practices tattooing and that who gets it done for herself, and also the lady who lengthens hair artificially and that who gets her hair lengthened artificially." The Prophet has cursed such ladies.
Bukhari :: Book 7 :: Volume 72 :: Hadith 832
Narrated 'Abdullah :
Allah has cursed those women who practise tattooing and those who get it done for themselves, and those who remove hair from their faces, and those who artificially create spaces between their teeth to look beautiful, such women as alter the features created by Allah. Why should I not then curse those whom Allah's Apostle has cursed and that is in Allah's Book?
Bukhari :: Book 7 :: Volume 63 :: Hadith 259
Narrated Abu Juhaifa:
The Prophet cursed the lady who practices tattooing and the one who gets herself tattooed, and one who eats (takes) Riba' (usury) and the one who gives it. And he prohibited taking the price of a dog, and the money earned by prostitution, and cursed the makers of pictures.
Making picture tree and unanimated object allowed
Bukhari :: Book 3 :: Volume 34 :: Hadith 428
Narrated Said bin Abu Al-Hasan:
While I was with Ibn 'Abbas a man came and said, "O father of 'Abbas! My sustenance is from my manual profession and I make these pictures." Ibn 'Abbas said, "I will tell you only what I heard from Allah's Apostle . I heard him saying, 'Whoever makes a picture will be punished by Allah till he puts life in it, and he will never be able to put life in it.' " Hearing this, that man heaved a sigh and his face turned pale. Ibn 'Abbas said to him, "What a pity! If you insist on making pictures I advise you to make pictures of trees and any other unanimated objects."

Allah's Apostle said, "The painter of these pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them, Make alive what you have created.' "

any interpretation on this?? some modern interpretors say it actually means the heart and soul will be like monkey/pigs. As none have ever witness transformation of human into those animals.

but other hadith did mention about those transformed humans dont breed much or short liven,
Quote
Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: Verily, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, did not destroy a people or did not torment a people, and let their race grow. Apes and swine had been even before that (when the deniers of truth were tormented and suffered metamorphosis).

Watching/listening to songs these days, there is no wonder that Islam has banned music.

Journalist David Noebel summarized it well in 1982, when he judged the impact John Lennon had on music:

“The present rock ‘n’ roll scene is one giant, multi-media portrait of degradation- a sleazy world of immorality, venereal disease, anarchy, nihilism, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, death, Satanism, perversion and orgies.”

Note that when I am talking about Music and Art, I am meaning those which doesn't cause problem. For example classic music, Arts of Da Vinci, Sculptures of Miachelangelo that is never worshipped. Look, is cultivating grapes haram?? Grapes are used to make wine, so why it isn't made haram??

I ain't interested about ruling. I am interested to get logical answer. Of course non-muslims won't be much interested in a religion that prohibits all forms of good arts and crafts. Afterall, a religion is a guideline to live your life.

http://www.sailanmuslim.com/news/fatwa-on-music-by-the-grand-mufti-and-shaykh-of-al-azhar-shaykh-jad-al-haq-ali-jad-al-haq/

Al-Azhar's grand mufti making a rulling on music allowed. And as far as i recall, i think AC also had an article where brother Osama proved it was allowed. Not sure though but most probably there is/was a such article.

Brother Abdallah, I will explain to you...

"Do not follow in the footsteps of Satan"

Some form of music is probably ok... But the problem emerges here; Who is to draw the red line between the halal and the haram?

Let's take alcohol for example. A Glass of wine a day wouldn't really hurt anyone would it? Again the problem is that some people cannot restrain themselves and they go for more.

Same for music, maybe started with only a singing voice, then the musical instruments were added to the mix, followed by dancing and fancy outfits... Lyrics changing with time, becoming more and more immoral..

You see the trend?

Allah has banned anything which may LEAD to Haram. Allah knows that not all people can just have 1 glass of wine a day.. hence he banned it. Same for music. It will eventually devolve into something nasty.. The proof is out there.

This is my take on it. Allah knows best.

Salam

I already told that SOME MUSICS ARE ALLOWED LIKE 'DAF' or the MUSIC WHICH IS NOT ATTRACTIVE..

YOU should stop listening to that Music which keeps on playing in your brain because that disturbs your Salah

NOTE : I don't really know about the answer regarding arts such as Painting, or any old/Historical buildings etc...

Makruh and Haram...........

This is an old Osama Abdullah article that was removed from this site.

http://www.irfi.org/articles/articles_351_400/is_music_prohibited_in_islam.htm

Say, "Who prohibited the nice things God has created for His creatures, and the good provisions?" Say,"Such provisions are to be enjoyed in THIS life by those who BELIEVE. Moreover, the good provisions will be exclusively theirs on the Day of resurrection." We thus explain the revelations for people who know."  QURAN, 7:32

Now some hadiths:

From Bukhari Volume 2, Book 15, Number 70:

Narrated Aisha:
Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs of Buath (a story about the war between the two tribes of the Ansar, the Khazraj and the Aus, before Islam). The Prophet (p.b.u.h) lay down and turned his face to the other side. Then Abu Bakr came and spoke to me harshly saying, "Musical instruments of Satan near the Prophet (p.b.u.h) ? " Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) turned his face towards him and said, "Leave them." When Abu Bakr became inattentive, I signaled to those girls to go out and they left. It was the day of 'Id, and the Black people were playing with shields and spears; so either I requested the Prophet (p.b.u.h) or he asked me whether I would like to see the display. I replied in the affirmative. Then the Prophet (p.b.u.h) made me stand behind him and my cheek was touching his cheek and he was saying, "Carry on! O Bani Arfida," till I got tired. The Prophet (p.b.u.h) asked me, "Are you satisfied (Is that sufficient for you)?" I replied in the affirmative and he told me to leave.

This same Hadith is reported to us again in Sahih Muslim:

Book 004, Number 1942:

'A'isha reported: The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) came (in my apartment) while there were two girls with me singing the song of the Battle of Bu'ath. He lay down on the bed and turned away his face. Then came Abu Bakr and he scolded me and said: Oh! this musical instrument of the devil in the house of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)! The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) turned towards him and said: Leave them alone. And when he (the Holy Prophet) became inattentive, I hinted them and they went out, and it was the day of 'Id and negroes were playing with shields and spears. (I do not remember) whether I asked the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) or whether he said to me if I desired to see (that sport). I said: Yes. I stood behind him with his face parallel to my face, and he said: O Banu Arfada, be busy (in your sports) till I was satiated. He said (to me): Is that enough? I said: Yes. Upon this he asked me to go.

Once again in Bukhari, this event is recorded:

Volume 5, Book 58, Number 268:

Narrated Aisha:
That once Abu Bakr came to her on the day of 'Id-ul-Fitr or 'Id ul Adha while the Prophet was with her and there were two girl singers with her, singing songs of the Ansar about the day of Buath. Abu Bakr said twice. "Musical instrument of Satan!" But the Prophet said, "Leave them Abu Bakr, for every nation has an 'Id (i.e. festival) and this day is our 'Id."

PROPHET SM WOULD NEVER DO SOMETHING THAT IS HARAM.

   Noble Verse 4:163 "We have sent thee inspiration, as We sent it to Noah and the Messengers after him: we sent inspiration to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms."
 17:55 "And it is your Lord that knoweth best all beings that are in the heavens and on earth: We did bestow on some prophets more (and other) gifts than on others: and We gave to David (the gift of) the Psalms."

Why would Allah give David something that would take people away from worshiping Allah??

PROPHET SM WOULD NEVER DO SOMETHING THAT IS HARAM.

I kinda knew u would post these, bro.

Well, u r just looking at how the Prophet permitted music. Look a little carefully. Why did Abu Bakr said, "Instruments of Satan"? ??? Where did he get that idea? ??? Musical instruments are things people have loved in all times and in all places. Of course the Prophet told him.

Ok, think it this way. If someone was eating dates in front of the Prophet, and Abu Bakr said, "Dates of Satan near the Prophet?" Would the Prophet just say, "Leave him Abu Bakr"? ??? He would certainly be angry! Because to make Halal into Haram is Kufr!! (You understand how heavy would that be?)

A wise and close companion like Abu Bakr would never call a halal thing SATANIC unless the Prophet had told him. And the Prophet would get angry at him or warn him because making halal, haram is kufr, read verse 7:32 u posted urself. And Prophet would never tolerate such thing. (Kufr in the house of the Prophet!!) At least Prophet would ask Abu Bakr where he had learnt that music is satanic. But he didnt do any of these. He just said leave them, which means music is generally haram, but the Prophet TOLLERATED it then. Why? The Prophet himself says why he did that. IT WAS EID! Read the hadith again and think about it, u will understand my point.

Quote
Noble Verse 4:163 "We have sent
thee inspiration, as We sent it to
Noah and the Messengers after him:
we sent inspiration to Abraham,
Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes,
to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and
Solomon, and to David We gave the
Psalms."
 17:55 "And it is your Lord that
knoweth best all beings that are in
the heavens and on earth: We did
bestow on some prophets more (and
other) gifts than on others: and We
gave to David (the gift of) the
Psalms."
Why would Allah give David
something that would take people
away from worshiping Allah??

At first, I don't think Zabur means prayer songs WITH MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. As I know, only singing isnt prohibited, except vulgur talks. (Brother Tarek, ur post seems to say that singing is also prohobited, can u pls explain it dear bro? Im not a scholar)

Even if the Zabur was sang with instruments, that doesn't make it halal for us. Read the hadiths posted by bro Uzair.

Wine was halal once too. But its haram for us. Why? You answer that and inshaAllah I will try to answer u!

The muslim world would be better, stronger and unified if only we all believed in "Sami'na wa Atwa'na" (We hear and we obey, see verse 2:285) rather than explaining things like music is haram if only it distracts u from prayer and etc. Music is declared haram so it's haram. Read the hadiths again. Music is TOLLERABLE only in special occasions such as Eid, wedding etc.

If we apply logics and start to explain as I said before, we will also have to say;

Wine is halal if drank only a little bit.

Women dont need to wear hijaab if men change their character!

If the scientists invent a new kind of pig that doesn't have any nasty behavior and if its meat is totally harmless, then pork is halal! ('Cause that technology thing is moving fast, man!)

And I would like to explain bro Tarek's post with a practical example: Fire is dangerous, thats why we dont even go near it! Just like adultery is haram and so the Lord says, "Don't even go near adultery" [17:32] I hope u got my point dear brother Abdullah Tahmeed :)

And at last, I don't listen to musical instruments and I dont have any problem with that. If u love Allah truly u will be able to easily hate things He has prohibited! By the way I do listen to Nasheeds sometimes, without instruments and female voice. Still I am not sure about those as the sahabas didnt sing nasheeds (as far as I know) and they definitely didnt use voice effects so all these could be just bidat. I am expecting bro Tarek to shed some light upon it as I learnt from one of his posts that he takes lesson from a knowledgable sheikh :) I am not currently under any islamic scholar :-[

"We hear and we obey"- say it, believe it.

Tahmeed
