Fitna: persecution or disbelief
« on: December 19, 2012, 04:29:10 PM »
Peace
In verses 2:191-193 and verse 8: 39 both mention the word Fitna. Fitna here has been translated into 2 things, persecution and oppression, or disbelief. Mushin khan, ibn qayyim and ibn kathir says it is disbelief, shirk. However, Yusuf Ali, Pickthall, Ghali, Shakir say that it is persecution. They all use tis evidence:
(And fight them until there is no more Fitnah...).'' Ibn `Umar said, "We did that during the time of the Messenger of Allah, when Islam was weak and the man would be tried in religion, either tormented to death or being imprisoned. When Islam became stronger and widespread, there was no more Fitnah.''
Which opinion do you believe is right?
Peace

As-Salamu `Alaykum wpWa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,
Isn't Fitnah manifest? Im not a scholar either, but I think it means trying to make problems that lead to bigger problems purposely, and Almighty Allah knows best. Wait for somebody else to show their opinion.
By the way, isn't killing the same thing as persecution?

yes it does, but some of the old tafsirs like ibn kathir said this means shirk, yet some of the new ones like pickthall said persecution or oppression.

If persecution means killing then Fitnah can't mean killing. Killing cannot be greater than killing. Almighty Allah knows best.
