Why do I say that Ali should've been the first Caliph?
« on: May 08, 2013, 01:53:31 PM »
As'salamu Alaikum everyone,

A Muslim brother emailed me and asked me this question.  I therefore feel it would help all Muslims to answer it in public, insha'Allah.  Feel free to join in.  Here are some facts that no Sunni or Shia disagrees on:

1-  After Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) death, Ali was busy burrying the Prophet and making the necessary preparations and setup service for the Prophet's grave.  Our Sunni sources also say that Ali isolated himself from people for 6 months and just wanted to be away from people and to be all alone.  The Shia sources say that Ali was upset from Abu Bakr for this period for rushing the elections during Ali's absence, and never gave Ali the chance to get elected.  They also say that Ali for the sake of keeping Muslims united finally gave his Bay3a (vote) to Abu Bakr to be the Muslims' Caliph after 6 months.

2-  Our Sunni sources say that the reason why Abu Bakr rushed the Bay3a was because the Muslims of mecca and Madina (with their pre-Islamic tribal mentality of Ignorance or Jaahiliyyah) had disagreements or issues on FROM WHERE the next Caliph should be.  A good support for the Sunnis claim is the fact that Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, chose to live his days in MADINA and not MECCA after the liberation of Mecca, despite the fact that his beloved city was Mecca and not Madina.  The Prophet made the leaders of Muslims be from Makkah, while he gave himself as a gift for the Madina Muslims.  And he indeed died in Madina.

So Caliph Abu Bakr did what he did to destroy the tumult among the Muslims.  As a human, it is also possible that he had desire to be the next ruler.  No shame in that.  I mean, who wouldn't really.  But it wasn't his TOP PRIORITY.  I don't believe it was.  The Shias disagree with us on this, but our sources have much stronger evidence than what they have.  And my evidence above is just one from many.

Here is where I believe Ali should've been the first Caliph:

1-  Ali was to Muhammad as Aaron was to Moses, peace be upon all of them.

2-  Ali was from Ahlul Bayt, who we send Peace and Blessings to in every single Prayer in our 5 daily Prayers.

3-  Ali was never part of the Bay3a (election).  He should've been given that chance even after Abu Bakr was elected.

But Ali was above any worldly gain, because he was really a pious and purified Believer as the members of Ahlul Bayt were, as Allah Almighty mentioned in the Glorious Quran.  Ali didn't really care much about being a Caliph.  But NONETHELESS, he should've been at least given the opportunity.

Here is another point that destroys the Shias:  Ali and his sons had always served Islam under Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman!  They took orders from them, traveled to distant lands to spread Islam based on their orders and commands, and served Islam and Muslims under the rulership of these three rightly guided Caliphs.  And when Ali became the Caliph, Ali never declared himself to be an Imam, nor did Hasan nor did Hussein, and neither did any of them declare that there are a total of 12 Imams.  In fact, Shias themselves disagree in the number of Imams.  Some say 4, others say 6, but the majority say 12 Imams.

And like I said before, their top Scriptures such as AL-KAAFI (their equivalence to our Sahih Bukhari and Muslim) and other similar books were written even hundreds of years after our Hadiths Sahih Collections.  So their religion is a religion of doubtful and absurd narrations, and nothing more.  They have absurd things that they strongly believe in such as the sky rained blood for 3 days when Hussein died, and the soil of Karbala became the holiest soil on earth by Allah Almighty's Command, and so on.

But none of this would make a Shia a polytheist to me as a Muslim.  The reason why Shias are polytheists is because they seek members of Ahlul Bayt for:

1-  Guidance.
2-  Mercy.
3-  Help.
4-  Protection.

They literally pray to them and seek these things from them.  Plus, we see the ridiculous brutal and bloody beating with swords, knives, rocks and even shoes every year done by them to themselves.  These blasphemy and an idol worship of Ahlul Bayt.  It is 100% outside the fold of Islam.

I hope this helps, insha'Allah.

Take care,
Osama Abdallah

?

Walaikum Salam wr wb,

Ali didn't isolate himself. Infact, he supported the first Caliph Abubakr in his caliphate. He supported Abubakr against the apostate tribes.

Also, Ali gave Bayah the next day, not after six months. This is mentioned in Sahih Hadiths narrated by Abu Saeed al-Khudri (ra) in:

-Mujama’a al Zawa’ed (5/183), rijal are people of saheeh.
-Al Bidayah wal Nihayah (5/281), chain thabit and saheeh.
-Al Mustadrak (3/76) and al Sunan al Kubrah (8/143) with two SAHIH chains

Yes he didn't want to be caliph but Muhajirin and Ansar elected him as their caliph.

Ali (ra) says:

Narrated Qays bin al Abdi: I Witnesses the sermon of Ali on the day of Basarah, he said: ” He praised Allah and thanked him and he mentioned the Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa sallam) and his sacrifice to the people, then Allah swt took his soul. (After he said that) then the Muslims saw that they should give the Caliphate to Abu Bakr (RA) so they pledged their allegiance and made their promise of loyalty, and I gave my pledge and I promised him my loyalty, They were pleased and so was I. He (Abu Bakr) did good deeds and made Jihad until Allah took his soul may Allah have mercy on him.” [Imam Abdullah ibn Ahmad narrated in his “Sunnan” (2/563) via trustworthy narrators]

Here is where I believe Ali should've been the first Caliph:
1-  Ali was to Muhammad as Aaron was to Moses, peace be upon all of them.

Answer: 1- Aaron (as) didn't succeed Musa (as). Thus, it is wrong to use that example.

The Hadith "You are to me as Harun (as) was to Musa (as)" in context:

We read in Tareekh al-Islam, Vol.1, p.232:

The Messenger of Allah set out for Tabuk with an army of 30,000 men from al-Medinah…and he put Muhammad bin Maslamah Ansari in charge of al-Medinah…The Prophet had left behind Ali to look after his family. The Munafiqoon used this as an opportunity to spread false rumors about Ali. They implied that the Prophet gave little importance to Ali and therefore left him alone in al-Medinah. When his patience ran out, he (Ali) hurried from al-Medinah and–joining the Prophet at al-Jurf–asked: “The Munafiqoon are saying such-and-such about me and so I have come to you.” The Prophet of Allah said: “They are liars. I have left you behind to look after my household, so go back.” In order to soothe his feelings, the Prophet further added: “You are to me as Haroon was to Musa, except that there will be no Prophet after me.” Ali returned to al-Medinah pacified and satisfied.

Explanation of Imam al-Qurtubi in his Tafseer:

There is no disagreement that Haroon died before Musa…and (Haroon) was not a successor after him (Musa), for the successor (to Musa) was Yusha bin Noon (i.e. Joshua), so if he (the Prophet) wanted by his saying (to grant Ali) the Caliphate, he would have said “you will be to me like Yusha was to Musa”, so when he didn’t say this it proved that he didn’t want that meaning, but he (simply) wanted that “you are my deputy over my family in my life and my absence from my family, like Haroon was deputy of Musa over his people when he left to speak to his Lord.”

2-  Ali was from Ahlul Bayt, who we send Peace and Blessings to in every single Prayer in our 5 daily Prayers.

Answer 2 -  Just because someone is from Ahlulbayt of the Prophet (saw) doesn't mean he should succeed the Prophet (saw) . The Prophet (saw) was not a King but a Prophet. Also, Ibn Abbas ibn Jafar, Aqeel were also from Ahlulbayt etc.

Importantly, the Prophet (saw) in his last days appointed Abubakr (ra) as prayer Imam. What does it indicate?

3-  Ali was never part of the Bay3a (election).  He should've been given that chance even after Abu Bakr was elected.

But Ali was above any worldly gain, because he was really a pious and purified Believer as the members of Ahlul Bayt were, as Allah Almighty mentioned in the Glorious Quran.  Ali didn't really care much about being a Caliph.  But NONETHELESS, he should've been at least given the opportunity.

Answer 3 -  ALL Sahaba including Ali gave bayah to Abubakr in the Prophet's (saw) Mosque. So If Muhajirin and Ansar (they are praised in the Quran) agreed that Abubakr be their caliph and Ali himself never claimed that he should've been the first caliph,  then who are we to make claims that such and such person should have been the first Caliph?

Ali never claimed that he deserved to be the Caliph and that Abubakr didn't deserve. He was only upset that he was not informed about Saqifa NOT because He should've been the first Caliph.

The words of Ali himself:

“We were only angry because we were late for the consultation, we see Abu Bakr as the most deserving of the people to this position after the Apostle of Allah (sallalahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa sallam), he is the companion in the cave and the second of the two and we know of his honour and rank, The prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa sallam) had ordered him to lead the people in prayer while he was alive”.

Sources: Al Bidayah wal nihayah (6/341), Khilafat Abu Bakr p67, chain is good.

Yes no doubt Ali and other Muhajirin Sahaba, except Umar and Ubaida ibn Jarah, were not present in Saqifa where where Abubakr was given the first Bayah by the people of Ansar. The Ansar (original residents of Madina) gave their Bayah. Now only Muhajirin Sahaba left. They including Ali gave their Bayah in the mosque of the Prophet (saw).

Lets know the Background of Saqifah:

It is related by Umar that as they were seated in the Prophet’s house, a man cried out all of a sudden from outside: “O Son of Khattab (i.e. Umar), pray step out for a moment.” Umar told him to leave them alone and go away as they were busy in making arrangements for the burial of the Prophet. The man replied that an incident had occurred: the Ansar were gathering in force at Saqifah Bani Sa’idah, and–as the situation was grave–it was necessary that he (Umar) should go and look into the matter lest the Ansar should do something which would lead to a (civil) war. On this, Umar said to Abu Bakr: “Let us go.”

(Al Faruq, by Allamah Shibli Numani, Vol 1, p.87)

Umar learned of this (i.e. the gathering of the Ansar at Saqifah) and went to the Prophet’s house and sent (a message) to Abu Bakr, who was in the building…[Umar] sent a message to Abu Bakr to come to him. Abu Bakr sent back (a message) that he was occupied (i.e. with caring for the Prophet’s body), but Umar sent him another message, saying: “Something (terrible) has happened that you must attend to personally.” So he (Abu Bakr) came out to him…

(The History of al-Tabari, Vol.10, p.3)

Sama Ali a.s never supported abu bakr and umar, ye this is right Ali a.s wasnt greedy of caliphhood but it doesnt deny the fact that it was stolen away from him with dishonesty, on which Ali a.s was agreed that caliphood was his right
and abu bakr did dishonesty

this has been written in sahih bukhari
But we used to consider that we too had some right in this affair (of rulership) and that he (i.e. Abu Bakr) did not consult us in this matter kitab al almaghazi  (Book #59, Hadith #546)

same hadis is in sahih muslim and allama wahiduz zaman with sharah nawai has written with the sharah
of sahih muslim

It is narrated on the authority of Urwa b. Zubair who narrated from A'isha that she informed him that fatima, daughter of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him), sent someone to Abu Bakr to demand from him her share of the legacy left by the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) from what Allah had bestowed upon him at Medina and Fadak and what was left from one-filth of the income (annually received) from Khaibar. Abu Bakr said: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:" We (prophets) do not have any heirs; what we leave behind is (to be given in) charity." The household of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) will live on the income from these properties, but, by Allah, I will not change the charity of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) from the condition in which it was in his own time. I will do the same with it as the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upun him) himself used to do. So Abu Bakr refused to hand over anything from it to fatima who got angry with Abu Bakr for this reason. She forsook him and did not talk to him until the end of her life. She lived for six months after the death of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). When she died, her husband. 'Ali b. Abu Talib, buried her at night. He did not inform Abu Bakr about her death and offered the funeral prayer over her himself. During the lifetime of fatima, 'All received (special) regard from the people. After she had died, he felt estrangement in the faces of the people towards him. So he sought to make peace with Abu Bakr and offer his allegiance to him. He had not yet owed allegiance to him as Caliph during these months. He sent a person to Abu Bakr requesting him to visit him unaccompanied by anyone (disapproving the presence of Umar) (Book #019, Hadith #4352)

imam nawai wrote in his sharah
Ali a.s didnt even wanted to meet umar coz umar's actions could be against ahlbayt a.s
refference sahih muslim alama wahiduzama with sharah nawai page 34 volume 5 sahih muslim

now in these ahadiths if we read them full we can clearly see Ali a.s didnot gave bayah to abu bkr umar 6 months
which clearly contradicts the ahadiths you have given from out of 6 authentic books of ahlsunnah none of the books say Ali a.s
pledge allegiance on the same day but there is time period of 6 months has been written in siha sittah

now if you notice lets see what umar is saying in saqifa

So if any person gives the Pledge of allegiance to somebody (to become a Caliph) without consulting the other Muslims, then the one he has selected should not be granted allegiance, lest both of them should be killed."  (Book #82, Hadith #817)
sahih bukhari

so you see my friend? what the narrations say? 1: Ali a.s said we too had some right in this affair (of rulership)
2: abu bakr didnot consulted us

what we get is Ali a.s clears that he was elligible of khilafat and abubkr didnot consulted him too and the time period is 6 months
now according to hazrat umar the punishment of not consulting others for rulership is death and the person who donot consult others for rulership his rulership is baatil
this punishment should b implied on abubkr and umr as per them

now come to the legacy of umar ibn khattab what he is saying in sahih muslim
this is timeperiod of more then 2 years Ali a.s keep considering umar and abu bkr sinful liar and treachrous people

Sahih Muslim Book 019, Number 4349 wherein Caliph Umar acknowledged the following to Imam ‘Ali (as):

“When the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) passed away, Abu Bakr said:” I am the successor of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him).” Both of you came to demand your shares from the property (left behind by the Messenger of Allah). (Referring to Hadhrat ‘Abbas), he said: You demanded your share from the property of your nephew, and he (referring to ‘Ali) demanded a share on behalf of his wife from the property of her father. Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) had said:” We do not have any heirs; what we leave behind is (to be given in) charity.” So both of you thought him to be a liar, sinful, treacherous and dishonest.  And Allah knows that he was true, virtuous, well-guided and a follower of truth. When Abu Bakr passed away and (I have become) the successor of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him), you thought me to be a liar, sinful, treacherous and dishonest”.

conclusion: it was Ali a.s's right to be the fst caliph and he didnt pledged them from the above points 1 coz he couldnt pledge to the criminal whos punishment is death and khilafat is batil(according to speech of umar in saqifa) 2 nor abu bkr umar tried to meet ali a.s during those 6 months proves they were doing batil khilafat with corrupt basis as per them shortly they were doing the crime with their full intention from which they were fully aware off 3 Ali a.s kept calling abu bakr and umar liars till khilaafat of umar ibn khatab (according to umar ibn khtab) which counts 2 years + after abu bkr, 4 abubkr umar did batil khilafat according to their own speeches and narrations of sihah sittah as mentioned above and were criminals of death punishment
so
your claims have no weight jst contradictory to the siha sittah most authentics after Quran for ahlsunnah and speeches of abu bkr and umar.

2nd thing is about narration of aron a.s and moses a.s
fst Prophet sas said this to Ali a.s when he made him CALIPH

here is the arabic scan of hadis here you can clearly see the words takhlafni derived from root khalifa used by prophet sas and the same is translated by urdu translator allama wahiduz zaman with sharah imam nawai fazail sahaba narration 1507 vol 3

now here is the HolyQuran surah 7verse 142 وَقَالَ مُوسَى لأَخِيهِ هَارُونَ اخْلُفْنِي فِي قَوْمِي

The word ukhulfni is the root origin of the Arabic word Khalifa (Caliph), by whose use Allah, who is above all error, is directly implying that Harun (as) would now take Musa (as)’ s role among the people as their khalifa, the position that Musa (as) had now been passed to his brother Harun (as). If you look at the available English translations they confirm this, although they don’t use the words caliph. A successor is a person who takes the place of another when that person leaves, whether temporarily or forever. This makes it clear that Nabi Harun [as] held the position of Caliph during the life of Musa [as]. Now let us turn to the hadith. Sometimes in translation of the beautiful marvelous Arabic of the Qur’an, whose depth one can spend a whole lifetime studying, the true meaning of a word of Allah is lost. By study of the pure classical Quranic Arabic used here we shall show the position the Qur’an gives Harun (as) to Musa (as) and thereby the position Muhammad(s) gave Ali (as) in this hadith, for this verse clarifies the relationship of Harun (as) to Musa (as). In English the one Arabic word ukhulfni chosen by Allah in 7:142 has been translated in English transliteration in manner that indicate succession.

[Mohsin Khan]: And Mûsa (Moses) said to his brother Harun (Aaron): Replace me among my people.

[Shakir]: and Musa said to his brother Haroun: Take my place among my people.

[Pickthal]: and Moses said unto his brother, Aaron: Take my place among the people.

it is clear from this verse that in Musa (as)’s absence Harun (as), who had till then been his vizier, became the acting khalifa.

same has been implied to MOLA ALI A.S except there is no prophet after Muhammad sas prooves Ali a.s was his khalifa as

another narration below is ibn asem Prophet sas said Ali a.s is the wali of every believer after me kitab al sunat volume 6 page 564
with sahih chain according to conditions of sahih muslim.

this is the narration of sahih muslim below

where umar calling himself wali and abu bkr wali just for implying himself as a selfproclaimed caliph of Prophet sas
prooves wali has been used in the kitabal sunnat by Prophet sas for Ali a.s as Khalifa of Prophet sas

last reply
“And granted we unto him out of our mercy his brother Haroon a.s”
(The Qur’an 19:53)
“You(Ali a.s) are my brother in this world and the next”
Tareekh ul Khulafa by Suyuti, page 177

“Musa said: O Allah! Assign me a Vizier from my family, (that is) my brother Haroon. Add to my strength through him, and make him share my task: that we may celebrate thy praise without stint… (Allah) said: “We granted your requests, O Musa”
(The Qur’an 20:29-36)

“When this verse descended, The Prophet (s) was on a mountain, straight after its descent, The Prophet (s) prayed to Allah, ‘Oh Allah! Through my brother Ali, ease the burden on my back’, and Allah accepted this prayer’
Tafsir Durre Manthur, by Jaladin Suyuti, Vol 4 p 528

…And Musa said unto his brother Haroon: Take my place (as khalifa) among the people.” (The Qur’an 7:142)

“Ibn Abbas report that the Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H) said to Ali : Your status to me as Aaron status to Moses except you are not a prophet, I shall not leave without you being my successor of every believer after me”
Albaani declared it ‘Hasan’ in Dhilal al-Janah, volume 2, page 337 Tradition 1188.

concludes your all claims contradict Quran and Ahadith and Prophet sas appointed Ali a.s as his successor according to Quran Ahadith History and Tafaseer and Ali a.s clearly opposed umar and abubkr even years after khilah of abubkr and criticized them for their sins and His=> Ali a.s's right. JazakAllahKher.
