Salam,

The root of the word Jinn, the J and the N, usually refers to something hidden and that cannot be seen.

Janna (paradise) is hidden from our eyes... When we say someone is "majnoon" or crazy, means his reason is "hidden".

Same applies for Jinn as us Humans cannot see them, yet they can see us.

Jinns are indeed Demons. Not all of them however. Some can be good and be Muslims while the others (the bad ones, i.e the demons) are the army of Satan on earth. All these haunting stories, ghost encounters, Aliens... can be explained as Jinns toying with us.

Satan himself is a Jinn, before he was cast out of heaven.

I hope this helps

Peace :)

So does the 72:1 say that demons loved listening to the Quran?

We can see that among mankind not all love listening to Quran. The same applies to the jinn.

Assalamu alaikum,

So we are studying demonology here? Has anyone played or seen the game 'Devil May Cry'? :P

In this game, the hero dante is a half demon. In the story, his father sparda was a powerful demon who ruled the human world in harmony. Both of them are good characters.

So see, the word 'demon' doesn't always have to mean 'bad' or 'evil'! :)

(NOTE: I am not advestising for any video game here! I have never played that game and I have given up playing video games. :) I am just using the example here. So don't take it seriously!)

If you use the word 'demon' (for jinns) in that sense, (i.e. demons don't always have to be evil) and then use the word 'devil' to mean evil jinns or evil demons, I think there is no problem!

Salam,
Tahmeed

Delita Tarek Habbal already said in his first post that not all Jins are bad..

Absolutely Brother Tahmeed,

In the Quran it also states "Shayateen min al onsi wal jiinn"...

Demons can be both, People or Jinns.

You know what the literal definition of Shaytan is? Shaytan is derived from the word (Shawt)... Meaning distance. A shaytan is someone that creates a distance between yourself and Allah (SWT).

Both humans and Jinns have free will. They can chose to do bad or good.

But due to their "fiery nature" the jinns are more inclined to do evil.

Assalamu alaikum dear brother Uzair,

I hope this hasn't got too old to answer

1. I have heard some stories about that but they somehow sounded ridiculous to me. The main purpose of satan is to take men away from the right path, not to kill them. If he or his 'disciples' kill a man, that man will be a shaheed (if he is a muslim) and will go to heaven easily, which will actually be a great loss for satan!

But sura namal 27:17 says the army of Solomon (A) was made up of men, Jinns and birds. So this means jinns do have the ability to kill men, right? Or else what is their use in the army!!

But still, they are beings like us, having intelligence, imotions etc. So it won't be surprising if a jinn kills a man or frightens him out of rage or anger. But not like any horror movie. They can simply enter your body and take your upside down. But the stories I heard were like horror movies.

2. Yep, ur teacher is right. Read the hadith.

"Prophet SAWS said: There r three kinds of Jinns. One kind always keeps flying in the sky, the second kind exists in forms of snakes and dogs, the third kind keeps going towards the earth or lives on earth and inspite of living in one place they travel here and there without purpose."

I took this from Bilal Phillip's book, "The Fandamentals of Tawheed", and the only reference given there is Collected by At-Tabari and Al-Hakim, so IS can't be more specific dear brother, sorry :(

Allah Hafeez,
Tahmeed

(1) Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of 'Allah (may peace be upon him) said: When any one of you stands for prayer and there is a thing before him equal to the back of the saddle that covers him and in case there is not before him (a thing) equal to the back of the saddle, his prayer would be cut off by (passing of an) ass, woman, and black dog. I said: O Abu Dharr, what feature is there in a black dog which distinguish it from the red dog and the yellow dog? He said: O, son of my brother, I asked the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) as you are asking me, and he said: The black dog is a devil.  (Book #004, Hadith #1032)
