My rebuttal to Avijit Roy's "Does Quran have any Scientific miracles?" article.

Why does the Noble Quran use words that have multiple meanings?

Why should we accept the scientific meaning of the Word in the Noble Quran that fits our discoveries today, and not accept any of its other meanings, especially that the Word was revealed 1,500 years ago?

1- The use of scientific notions in the Noble Quran:

It is important to know that the Noble Quran doesn't give scientific equations. It instead gives many scientific notions that had been proven today to be clear Scientific Miracles because they fit perfectly with modern science. One of the Divine Miracles of the Noble Quran is that Allah Almighty (through His perfect use of the complex and artistic language of Arabic) used scientific notions to make the Noble Quran truly dynamic for all the times that It is presented in. These scientific notions hid in them, for many centuries, the scientific statements and discoveries that we just came to know today, and perhaps are even hiding in them more statements that our future generations will discover. These notions are basically key words and/or terms that describe certain creations of GOD Almighty. For example:

1- Allah Almighty in one Word said that the Universe is expanding and in another term said it will shrink back again. Science confirmed that today through the big bang and the cosmic crunch theories.

2- Allah Almighty in two Words mentioned the layers of waves and darkness inside the vast oceans. Science today, again, confirmed that.

3- Allah Almighty in one Word said that He made the earth as an egg. We all know today that earth is spherical and science did confirm that the earth is indeed egg-shaped.

4- Allah Almighty in few terms in several Noble Verses said that mountains prevent the earth from shaking. Science today did indeed confirm that mountains stabilize the earth and prevent it from constantly shaking while it is rotating around its own axle.

5- Allah Almighty in one term talked about the earth reducing in size. Science today indeed confirmed that earth is shrinking in size due to volcanoes and earth "debris" caused by erosions, earthquakes, sea-waves changing the shape and condition of the land and other natural factors, escaping to space. In fact, it is estimated that earth lost approximately 10-40 miles from its radius or depth size in the past 10 or so billion years! (I heard this from Dr. Zaghloul Al-Naggar on TV. My numbers may not be quite accurate because I am relying on memory, but the fact of the earth shrinking is definitely true, and in the link above I have provided several quotes from Western scientists demonstrating why the earth is reducing/shrinking in size).

6- Allah Almighty mentioned in one term the moon's fault line. Science today confirmed that the moon's fault line, which is splitting it in half, was caused by major moonquakes.

7- Allah Almighty in one term talked about the earth's 7 properties. Science today confirmed that the earth has 7 inner layers and 7 atmospheric layers.

8- Allah Almighty in one term talked about the region inside the human-brain that controls the movements. Science today confirmed that.

The Prophet of Islam, peace be upon him, was already accused of being crazy by the infidels. Have Allah Almighty given sophisticated scientific statements that covered exact details as we scientifically know them today, then no one would've believed the Prophet of Islam, because:

1- He wasn't a scientist and such science wasn't known to man back then, which makes it impossible for him to explain it, even if Allah Almighty Inspired it to him. The information would not have been understood by the nomad bedouins 1,500 years ago.

2- People had already inclined toward declaring the Prophet as an insane man, and many already did. Any extraordinary supernatural statement that requires a lot of scientific explanations such as "we have people standing on the other side of the world (under our feet), and all humans are actually standing on the side of the earth not on its top or back."

Such statement would require knowledge in gravity and astronomy, which man did not know about 1,500 years go.

Like I said, many have accused the Prophet of being a madman. Allah Almighty did not want to complicate Islam, especially to the people who did not know much about science:

"Say (to them O Muhammad SAW): "I exhort you on one (thing) only: that you stand up for Allahs sake in pairs and singly, and reflect (within yourselves the life history of the Prophet SAW): there is no madness in your companion (Muhammad SAW), he is only a warner to you in face of a severe torment." (The Noble Quran, 34:46)"

"And (O people) your companion (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) is not a madman; (The Noble Quran, 81:22)"

That is why Allah Almighty used scientific notions instead of statements and equations. They are for man to discover as he advances in life. The more man advances, the more he will find that many of his discoveries are mentioned in the Noble Quran. That is why the Noble Quran's Miracles are for all times and all places!

2- The complex language of Arabic:

Arabic is a very complex, artistic and poetical language by nature! A single word can mean a host of meanings. The art and beauty of Arabic comes in how a person constructs and puts together words to form a sentence or paragraph. The art and creativity in the style and poetry are what determine the strength and beauty of the sentence or poem. That is why the Noble Quran is extremely difficult to understand sometimes, even by the fluent and professional Arabic speakers. That is why Muslims always say that the translations of the Noble Quran do it absolutely no justice, because the poetry and complexity of language-art are completely compromised in the translation. What the English reader, for instance, is left with when reading the English Noble Quran, is the subject that the Noble Verses are talking about. But he/she doesn't see the beautiful and complex stylistic and linguistic Divine Miracle that the Arabic text carries in it.

At any rate, Allah Almighty Chose for the Noble Quran to be Difficult to comprehend, and to be quite a challenge to interpret and translate, because:

1- He Chose to have the Miracle of the Noble Quran be an ever lasting one by living in the text of the Holy Book Itself.

2- To demonstrate Its Divinity to the Arabs back then, who were very experienced/mature, fluent and also addicted to poetry, along with the Arabic-speaking people today, and to challenge them and to show them that certainly the Noble Quran is not just an average everyday book. It is indeed a Divine Miracle, proving that Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is indeed a Truthful and real Prophet.

3- This is Allah Almighty's way to Lead to the Right Path whom He pleases and to Lead astray whom He pleases.

First of all, we have to get something cleared up. No one ever claimed that the Noble Quran is a science book. The scientific miracles that exist in the Noble Quran, which had been discovered only recently (in the past 100+ years) are a plus, because they are Allah Almighty's way to communicate with the people of today - that many things that we discover were already foretold in the Noble Quran. But the Noble Quran itself is not a science book. We don't solve mathematics using the Noble Quran.

Objection 1: If it was indeed the case that scriptures contain scientific facts and principles then we wouldn't need popular science books to explain scientific facts to common people. Instead the verses of the scriptures which are claimed to represent scientific facts and principles could be compiled and published as an "introduction to science". There is no doubt that if those vague verses are indeed compiled and edited (omitting God or prophets and other holy references) and then published as a science book , these books will not even be published, even if it is, no one will buy it. It is a sure failure, that's why it has never been attempted by the apologists. These verses cannot stand on their own merit as anything close to even a popular exposition of scientific facts and principles, let alone as accurate scientific statements.

As I mentioned above, the Noble Quran is not a science book. The scientific miracles that exist in the Noble Quran, which had been discovered only recently (in the past 100+ years) are a plus, because they are Allah Almighty's way to communicate with the people of today - that many things that we discover were already foretold in the Noble Quran. Objection 2: If Quran is a book of science, then what branch of science is this? Physics ? Chemistry ? Biology ? Social science? Library science? Political science? No answer. [1] Mullahs can only give the answer in the line of technological/medical science relating blurry wordings of the book with practical examples of embryology, astronomy, Big-Bang, etc. Moreover, if one considers Quran as a super-scientific book then, they should be able to show us us at least one scientific principle that is disclosed in Qur'an without using any mumbo jumbo words and hocus pocus boring tricks of difficulty with confusing translation of Qur'an. They should be able to tell us where in the Qur'an one can find the laws of gravitation, laws of planetary rotation, principle of atomic structure of matters, the periodic table of elements, theory of relativity, geological science and which chapter of Quran deals with the modern science of aerodynamics, genetics engineering and inter-planetary travel, and elucidation of genetic code etc [2]. We find no meaningful direction. Moreover, If a perfect book written by a perfect God having intention to reveal a scientific idea, it should not have been so vague and metaphoric, but accurate and scientific enough that it can be put in a physics /chemistry/biology textbook without the need of any change. Not a single verse in the Holy Books contain even one scientific term, like atom, electron, cloning, Theory of relativity, Uncertainty principle etc. A "perfect" book cannot be lacking in precision so much [3].

As to categorizing the Noble Quran, it includes all sciences. Allah Almighty in the Noble Quran explained how He created several of His creations, such as the Earth, the Universe, the Human Body, etc.... Let us look at the following examples:

"We will soon show them Our signs in the Universe and INSIDE THEIR SELVES, until it will become quite clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient as regards your Lord that He is a witness over all things? (The Noble Quran, 41:53)"

Objection 3: If one insists that the verses of scriptures are literally word of Allah (God) who is omnipotent and omniscient then one is forced to conclude that Allah as a perfect being is even a worse science writer than humans and if Allah really wanted to communicate scientific facts and principles to his mortal creations, humans He failed miserably. Nobody discovered or understood those scientific facts and principles until humans discovered them on their own with no help from the verses. And as the words of a perfect being, the scientific accuracy of the verses should have been of such magnitude and objectivity that their could not be any scope of any dispute about them among humans and ALL would accept them like they do all the scientific principles discussed in science text books.

Allah Almighty gave us headlines in the Noble Quran. He did not intend for it to be a scientific Book. It is through these headlines that He communicates to the advanced Mankind of today. As I mentioned above, these Scientific Miracles that exist in the Noble Quran had only been discovered and talked about in the past 100 years of so. Now we will discuss and scrutinize critically the 10 top most (pseudo) scientific myths of Quran.

1. Qur'an foretells about Big bang.

Moreover, . Big Bang in Physics refers to the explosion of SPACE-TIME SINGULARITY (not matter). Matter was not even created when Big Bang happened. Earth was formed billions of years after the Big Bang. The above verses are clearly referring to earth and sky being "joined" (Which doesn't even have a common sense or scientific meaning) together and then being split apart (Again no scientific or common sense meaning), forget about comparing it to Big Bang!

If there is no answer of those scientific enquiries, how can one make himself convince that those verses actually describing big bang, not the partition of an egg before making an omelet ?

2. Qur'an foretells about Expanding Universe.

Mullahs try to relate the above mentioned ayat with expanding universe. But there is no mention of "universe" at all in this verse. This verse here is only talking about earth. "Spreading the earth out " does not correlate with any expansion of universe by any means, rather it establishes century old incorrect Quranic flat earth theory [6].

The cause of the expansion of the universe is scientifically known from Modern High Energy Astrophysics, known as the theory of inflation. The theory is guided by Einstein's mathematical theory of general relativity about the physical universe. These are all characterized, at ANY instant in cosmological history, by mathematically- infinite space-like surfaces ( 3-d space in other words). In this (open) model of the universe, everything is expanding in the same sense that the points on a balloon's surface move away from all other points as the balloon is inflated. General Relativity says that for infinite universes, the same kind of expansion occurs. Inflationary cosmology adds to this by saying that we live in a small pocket of some vaster space-time. This pocked emerged from a tiny patch in the primordial space-time and inflated to a vast size.

From the above analysis it is clear that nothing in those Qur'anic verses come any close to what an expansion of universe really means. Those who wants to relate the verse with expansion of universe, is just their wishful interpretation.

You have purposely presented the wrong Noble Verse! You have purposely failed to post the Noble Verse that precedes the one you presented! We wonder why, since you claim to be truthful and sincere?!

Let us look at Noble Verse 51:47 "And the firmament, We constructed with power and skill and verily We are expanding it." The Universe according to the Noble Quran will keep expanding and changing until the Day of Judgment.

In the Qur'an, which was revealed 14 centuries ago at a time when the science of astronomy was still primitive, the expansion of the universe was described like this:

"And it is We who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it."
(The Qur'an, 51:47)

The word "heaven", as stated in this verse, is used in various places in the Qur'an with the meaning of space and universe. Here again, the word is used with this meaning. In other words, in the Qur'an it is revealed that the universe "expands". And this is the very conclusion that science has reached today.

Until the dawn of the 20th century, the only view prevailing in the world of science was that "the universe has a constant nature and it has existed since infinite time". The research, observations, and calculations carried out by means of modern technology, however, have revealed that the universe in fact had a beginning, and that it constantly "expands".

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian physicist Alexander Friedmann and the Belgian cosmologist Georges Lemaitre theoretically calculated that the universe is in constant motion and that it is expanding.

This fact was proved also by observational data in 1929. While observing the sky with a telescope, Edwin Hubble, the American astronomer, discovered that the stars and galaxies were constantly moving away from each other. A universe where everything constantly moves away from everything else implied a constantly expanding universe. The observations carried out in the following years verified that the universe is constantly expanding. This fact was explained in the Qur'an when that was still unknown to anyone. This is because the Qur'an is the word of God, the Creator, and the Ruler of the entire universe.

Allah Almighty never gave any number for the Universe's age. Muslims do not believe that humans for instance existed only 5,000 years ago and will die in year 2000 or 2059 as many Christians believe.

Allah Almighty was very accurate in His claims in the Noble Quran. For instance, science proved that the metal "iron" was not created from earthly material or reactions. Iron was sent by burning stars traveling through space that had collided with earth! When those stars collided with earth and their melted metals cooled down and changed from liquid burned/melted metals to hard solid metals, they formed the metal of what we call today iron.

Let us look at Noble Verse 57:25 "We sent aforetime Our messengers with clear signs and sent down them the Book and the Balance (of right and wrong), that men may stand forth in justice; and We sent down iron, in which is (material for) Mighty war, as well as many benefits for mankind, that Allah may test who it is that will help, unseen, Him and His messengers: For Allah is Full of strength, exalted in Might (And able to enforce His Will)."

3. Qur'an mentions that the universe originated from a 'gaseous material'.

Muslim fundamentalists, by pointing out the above verse, claim that Qur'an miraculously foretells that origin of universe began with the gaseous mater. They try to confuse the common people that it is the great and surest sign that the Qur'an is a book of God. Let's examine their claim critically.

First of all, The universe did not begin as a gas or any gaseous material. From current Big Bang theory we know, the universe began before any matter of any kind existed--it began as pure energy. It took several moments for any matter to form, and then it was a plasma, not a gas. Gases only came later, after the plasma cooled, and yet gasses were still not the only constituent--much of the mass-energy at even that point, as before, was comprised of electromagnetic radiation--light. The fact that the Quran fails to mention any of this or any other crucial scientific information is precisely why its claim to "scientific accuracy" is to be dismissed. It is making vague metaphysical statements, and that is not science [7]

Care to present a quote to support you claim? You have already proved above that you are (perhaps) a decieving person Mr. Roy. Here is few quotes for you that disproves your unsupported claim:

He is Professor of Geology and the Chairman of the Department of Geology at the Institute of Geosciences, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany. He said: “Thinking where Muhammad came from . . . I think it is almost impossible that he could have known about things like the common origin of the universe, because scientists have only found out within the last few years, with very complicated and advanced technological methods, that this is the case.”"

Secondly, Even, for the shake of arguments, if we take "gaseous material" as plasma, then also the problem remains unsolved. The main problem is that the above-mentioned verse actually does not say about any "gaseous material," which mullahs are continuously claiming. The Arabic word used in this verse is dukhan, - "smoke." [7] Trying to relate smoke with gaseous material is nothing but a hide and seek wordy games played by Mullahs. Moreover, Smoke is made of ash, predominantly carbon, and is produced from burning (oxidation), not plasma condensation. Smoke looks nothing like heated hydrogen or helium, does not share its elemental mass or other properties, and does not even possess many of the general properties of a gas. Thus, Allah chose the wrong word. He could have used "hot gases" or "hot gases expanding in a vacuum" or anything which is more closer to the truth. If we critically examine this verse, it becomes very clear to us that this verse is far from being scientific to define initial condition of the universe, that verse is really hoax.

Allah Almighty as I said above gave headlines for science in the Noble Quran. The Noble Quran is not a scientific book! However, it is fascinating that a bedioun who lived in the desert 1500 years ago could come up with such a claim that had been scientifically proven to be Truthful.

As Dr. Alfred Kroner, one of the world's renowned geologists, said: "Thinking where Muhammad came from . . . I think it is almost impossible that he could have known about things like the common origin of the universe, because scientists have only found out within the last few years, with very complicated and advanced technological methods, that this is the case."

From Verse 41:9 we find that that the earth is made "in two days," and this is the first two days in the list. After the creation of earth, Allah describes the next two days of creation, completing the first "four days equal," in which mountains and plants are made in Verse 41:10. Thus, we find a gradual order of Qur'anic creation ie. Allah first created the earth and then filled the earth with mountains and plants (It is quite understandable that mountains and plants could not be made before the earth was made, thus 41:10 follows 41:9 in a quite reasonable order). But then we see that verse 41:11 establishes an undeniable context in which the universe exists as smoke at the same time that the earth already exists, since God "rose over towards the heaven when it was smoke" and spoke to it and to the earth, therefore no Muslim can rationally deny that this verse clearly says the earth existed at the same time as the smoke which is totally irrational and absurd.

Thus the verse mentioned above which is claimed to be a "perfect analogy" describing the initial condition of the universe is nothing but a clever deception.

First of all, it is important to know that the Days of Allah Almighty are different from our days. One day for Allah Almighty is equal to 1,000 years of ours:

"Yet they ask thee to hasten on the Punishment! But God will not fail in His Promise. Verily a Day in the sight of thy Lord is like a thousand years of your reckoning. (The Noble Quran, 22:47)"

Second of all, Allah Almighty created the earth as one ball of water. He later shaped it and reshaped it, and created the mountains, animals and life in it. This is all discussed and proved at:

The article is too lengthy to paste it here, but I have provided ample evidence from the Noble Quran and SCIENCE that again and again, proved the Noble Quran's accurate claims to be Truthful.

4. Qur'an reveals Embryological facts !

Some mullahs find the embryological facts in above verse. But if we check the verse from a rational point of view, it appears to us with a different meaning. Let's check the above verse critically. First line is totally wrong. Man is not a product of any wet earth. Moreover, Quran ambiguously asserts many common sensually meaningless statement about such an elementary matter. For examples sometimes it tells that we are created from earth (11:61), sometimes it claims from from dry clay (15:26,28,33, 17:61, 32:7), sometimes "from nothing" (19:67), sometimes "NOT from nothing" (52:35), sometimes from wet earth (23:12), or from mire (38:71), sometimes from water (25:54, 21:30, 24:45), sometimes from dust ( 3:59, 30:20, 35:11) or even sometimes from dead (30:19, 39:6). So which one is true ? Those contradictory ambiguous statements actually do not reveal any scientific facts regarding either how we created or what exactly we are made of.

Before analyzing rest of the portion of the above verse, we should give a useful information to the readers. In 1982 Keith Moore, an anatomy professor at the University of Toronto, produced a (in)famous textbook titled "The Developing Human, 3rd edition". In this book Moore states his astonishment at the way embryonic development is depicted in the Qur'an. Moore took Yusuf Ali's Translation of the above verse [8]:

Many people may amaze by the mention of sperm in this verse. But close observation reveals that there is nothing supernatural in it. Since the beginning of time man has been quite aware of the "seed" that is released from the penis during sexual intercourse. The old Hindu scriptures or Bible, which are much older than the Qur'an, also have such indication. Aristotle clearly described about formation of a child inside the womb early 1,000 years before the Qur'an was written. No body claiming for any miracles for it. In fact Aristotle correctly described the function of the umbilical cord, something not mentioned in the Qur'an, showing that earlier philosophers were aware of such things mentioned by Muhammad and more [8].

Actually Qur'an contains erroneous ancient theories developed by Roman and Greek philosophers about human development . Let us consider the following verse referring to sperm:

Clearly this verse is incorrect, and clearly it has origins in earlier theories. First of all, for sperm to originate between the back and the ribs would mean that it comes from the kidneys! Greek physician Hippocrates theorized this wrong idea long before Muhammad, that sperm passed through the kidneys into the penis. For centuries this was an accepted (and incorrect) belief of the origins of sperm. The same erroneous concept we also find in Qur'an.

The Arabic word used in this verse is nutfah which describes the fluid gushes out during sexual intercourse. Prof. Moore cleverly interpreted nutfah in sura 76:2 as "mingled fluid" and explains that this Arabic term refers to the male and female fluids which contain the gametes (male sperm and female egg). But fact is - the Qur'an emphatically does not mention sperm or eggs; it simply says nutfah (germinal fluid). All those embryological terms with sperm and eggs are the imaginative invention of Dr. Moore.

Finally, again we want to touch back on the verses that spoke of the development of an unborn child again. The Qur'an stated that the blood clot was turned to bone and then God "clothed the bones with flesh" (Quran 23:13-14). It is scientifically wrong. The fact is, in development process living tissue forms first, and then bones grow at a later time, and it continues to gain strength for many years after birth. But by expressing "blood clot was turned to bone" Quran reveals its one of many scientific inaccuracies.

Mr. Roy, it is sad that you have misunderstood the Noble Quran. Let us look at the three stages of the foetus formation in the Noble Quran and Science:

A few years ago a group of Arabs collected all information concerning embryology from the QUR'AN, and followed the instruction of the QUR'AN:

All the information from the QUR'AN so gathered, was translated into English and presented to Prof. (Dr.) Keith Moore, who was the Professor of Embryology and Chairman of the Department of Anatomy at the University of Toronto, in Canada. At present he is one of the highest authorities in the field of Embryology. He was asked to give his opinion regarding the information present in the QUR'AN concerning the field of embryology. After carefully examining the translation of the Qur'anic verses presented to him, Dr. Moore said that most of the information concerning embryology mentioned in the QUR'AN is in perfect conformity with modern discoveries in the field of embryology and does not conflict with them in any way. He added that there were however a few verses, on whose scientific accuracy he could not comment. He could not say whether the statements were true or false, since he himself was not aware of the information contained therein. There was also mention of this information in modern writings and studies on embryology. One such verse is:

"Proclaim! (or Read!) In the name Of thy Lord and Cherisher, WHO created---Created man, out of A (mere) clot Of congealed blood."

The word 'alaq' besides meaning a congealed clot of blood also means something that clings, a leech-like substance. Dr. Keith Moore had no knowledge whether an embryo in the initial stages appears like a leech. To check this out he studied the initial stage of the embryo under a very powerful microscope in his laboratory and compared what he observed with a diagram of a leech and he was astonished at the striking resemblance between the two! In the same manner, he acquired more information on embryology, that was hitherto not known to him, from the QUR'AN.

Dr. Keith Moore answered about eighty questions dealing with embryological data mentioned in the QUR'AN and HADITH. Noting that the information contained in the QUR'AN and HADITH was in full agreement with the latest discoveries in the field of embryology, Prof. Moore said, "If I was asked these questions thirty years ago, I would not have been able to answer half of them for lack of scientific information."

Dr. Keith Moore had earlier authored the book, 'The Developing Human'.After acquiring new knowledge from the QUR'AN, he wrote, in 1982, the 3rd edition of the same book, 'The Developing Human'. The book was the recipient of an award for the best medical book written by a single author. This book has been translated into several major languages of the world and is used as a textbook of embryology in the first year of medical studies. In 1981, during the Seventh Medical Conference in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, Dr. Moore said, "It has been a great pleasure for me to help clarify statements in the QUR'AN about human development. It is clear to me that these statements must have come to MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam--- from GOD or ALLAH, because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later. This proves to me that MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam--- must have been a messenger of GOD or ALLAH{The reference for this statement is the video tape titled 'This is the Truth'.For a copy of this video tape contact the Islamic Research Foundation}.

Dr. Joe Leigh Simpson, Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, U.S.A., proclaims: "... these HADITHS, sayings of MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam--- could not have been obtained on the basis of the scientific knowledge that was available at the time of the writer (7th century). It follows that not only is there no conflict between genetics and religion (ISLAM) but in fact religion (ISLAM) may guide science by adding revelation to some of the traditional scientific approaches... there exist statements in the QUR'AN shown centuries later to be valid which support knowledge in the QUR'AN having been derived from GOD."

"Now let man but think From what he is created! He is created from A drop emitted --- Proceeding from between The back bone and the ribs."

In embryonic stages, the reproductive organs of the male and female, i.e. the testicles and the ovaries, begin their development near the kidney between the spinal column and the eleventh and twelfth ribs. Later they descend; the female gonads(ovaries) stop in the pelvis while the male gonads(testicles) continue their descent before birth to reach the scrotum through the inguinal canal. Even in the adult after the descent of the reproductive organ, these organs receive their nerve supply and blood supply from the Abdominal Aorta, which is in the area between the back bone(spinal column) and the ribs. Even the lymphatic drainage and the venous return goes to the same area.

The Glorious QUR'AN mentions no less than eleven times that the human being is created from 'nutfah', which means a minute quantity of liquid or a trickle of liquid which remains after emptying a cup. This is mentioned in several verses of the QUR'AN including 22:5 and 23:13. {The same is also mentioned in the QUR'AN in 16:4, 18:37, 35:11, 36:77, 40:67, 53:46, 75:37, 76:2 and 80:19} Science has confirmed in recent times that only one out of an average of three million sperms is required for fertilising the ovum. This means that only a 1/three millionth part or 0.00003% of the quantity of sperms that are emitted is required for fertilisation.

"And made his progeny From a quintessence Of the nature of A fluid despised."

The Arabic word 'sulalah' means quintessence or the best part of a whole. We have come to know now that only one single spermatozoan that penetrates the ovum is required for fertilization, out of the several millions produced by man. That one spermatozoan out of several millions, is referred to in the QUR'AN as 'sulalah'. 'Sulalah' also means gentle extraction from a fluid.The fluid refers to both male and female germinal fluids containing gametes. Both ovum and sperm are gently extracted from their environments in the process of fertilization.

The Arabic word 'nutfatun amshaajin' means mingled liquids. According to some commentators of the QUR'AN, mingled liquids refers to the male or female agents or liquids. After mixture of male and female gamete, the zygote still remains 'nutfah'. Mingled liquids can also refer to spermatic fluid that is formed of various secretions that come from various glands. Therefore 'nutfatun amshaaj', i.e. a minute quantity of mingled fluids refers to the male and female gametes (germinal fluids or cells) and part of the surrounding fluids.

The sex of a foetus is determined by the nature of the sperm and not the ovum. The sex of the chil, whether female or male, depends on whether the 23rd pair of chromosomes is XX or XY respectively. Primarily sex determination occurs at fertilization and depends upon the type of sex chromosome in the sperm that fertilizes an ovum. If it is an 'X' bearing sperm that fertilizes the ovum, the foetus is a female and if it is a 'Y' bearing sperm then the foetus is a male.

"That HE did create In pairs---male and female, From a seed when lodged (In its place)."

The Arabic word 'nutfah' means a minute quantity of liquid and 'tumna' means ejaculated or planted. Therefore 'nutfah' specifically refers to sperm because it is ejaculated.

"Was he not a drop Of sperm emitted (In lowly form)? Then did he become A clinging clot; Then did (ALLAH) make And fashion (him) In due proportion. And of him HE made Two sexes, male And female."

Here again it is mentioned that a small quantity (drop) of sperm (indicated by the word 'nutfatan min maniyyin) which comes from the man is responsible for the sex of the foetus. Mothers-in-law in the Indian subcontinent, by and large prefer having male grandchildren and often blame their daughters-in-law if the child is not of the desired sex. If only they knew that the determining factor is the nature of the male sperm and not the female ovum! If they were to blame anybody, they should blame their sons and not their daughters-in-law since both the QUR'AN and Science hold that it is the male fluid that is responsible for the sex of the child!

"HE makes you, In the wombs of your mothers, In stages, one after another, In three veils of darkness."

According to Prof. Keith Moore these three veils of darkness in the QUR'AN refer to"
(a) anterior abdominal wall of the mother
(b)the uterine wall (c)the amnio-chorionoic membrane.

"Man WE did create From a quintessence (of clay); Then WE placed him As ( a drop of) sperm In a place of rest, firmly fixed; Then WE made the sperm Into a clot of congealed blood; Then of that clot WE made A (foetus) lump; then WE Made out of that lump Bones and clothed the bones With flesh; then WE developed Out of it another creature. So blessed be ALLAH, The Best to create!"

In this verse ALLAH states that man is created from a small quantity of liquid which is placed in a place of rest, firmly fixed(well established or lodged) for which the Arabic word 'qararin makin' is used. The uterus is well protected from the posterior by the spinal column supported firmly by the back muscles. The embryo is further protected by the amniotic sac containing the amniotic fluid. Thus the foetus has a well protected dwelling place. This small quantity of fluid is made into 'alaqah', meaning something which clings. It also means a leech-like substance. Both descriptions are scientifically acceptable as in the very early stages the foetus clings to the wall and also appears to resemble the leech in shape. It also behaves like a leech(blood sucker) and acquires its blood supply from the mother through the placenta. The third meaning of the word 'alaqah' is a blood clot. During this 'alaqah' stage, which spans the third and fourth week of pregnancy, the blood clots within closed vessels. Hence, the embryo acquires the appearance of a blood clot in addition to acquiring the appearance of a leech. In 1677, Hamm and Leeuwenhoek were the first scientists to observe human sperm cells(spermatozoa) using a microscope. They thought that a sperm cell contained a miniature human being which grew in the uterus to form a newborn. This was known as the perforation theory. When scientists discovered that the ovum was bigger than the sperm, it was thought by De Graf and others that the foetus existed in a miniature form in the ovum. Later, in the 18th century Maupertuis propagated the theory of biparental inheritence. The 'alaqah' is transformed into 'mudghah' which means 'something that is chewed(having teeth marks)' and also something that is tacky and small which can be put in the mouth like gum. Both these explanations are scientifically correct. Prof. Keith Moore took a piece of plaster seal and made it into the size and shape of the early stage of foetus and chewed it between the teeth to make it into a 'Mudgha'. He compared this with the photographs of the early stage of foetus. The teeth marks resembled the 'somites' which is the early formation of the spinal column. This 'mudghah' is transformed into bones (izam). The bones are clothed with intact flesh or muscles (lahm). Then ALLAH makes it into another creature.
Prof. Marshall Johnson is one of the leading scientists in US, and is the head of the Department of Anatomy and Director of the Daniel Institute at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in US. He was asked to comment on the verses of the QUR'AN dealing with embryology. He said that the verses of the QUR'AN describing the embryological stages cannot be a coincidence. He said it was probable that MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam--- had a powerful microscope. On being reminded that the QUR'AN was revealed 1400 years ago, and microscopes were invented centuries after the time of PROPHET MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam---, Prof. Johnson laughed and admitted that the first microscope invented could not magnify more than 10 times and could not show a clear picture. Later he said: "I see nothing here in conflict with the concept that Divine intervention was involved when MUHAMMAD---sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam--- recited the QUR'AN."

According to Dr. Keith Moore, the modern classification of embryonic development stages which is adopted throughout the world, is not easily comprehensible, since it identifies stages on a numerical basis i.e. stage 1, stage 2, etc. The divisions revealed in the QUR'AN are based on distinct and easily identifiable forms or shapes, which the embryo passes through. These are based on different phases of prenatal development and provide elegant scientific descriptions that are comprehensible and practical. Similar embryological stages of human development have been described in the following verse:

"Was he not a drop Of sperm emitted (In lowly form)? Then did he become A clinging clot; Then did (ALLAH) make And fashion (him) In due proportion. And of him HE made Two sexes, male And female."

"HIM WHO created thee, Fashioned thee in due proportion, And gave thee a just bias; In whatever Form HE wills, Does HE put thee together."

At the 'mugdhah' stage, if an incision is made in the embryo and the internal organ is dissected, it will be seen that most of them are formed while the others are not yet completely formed. According to Prof. Johnson, if we describe the embryo as a complete creation, then we are only describing that part which is already created.If we describe it as an incomplete creation, then we are only describing that part which is not yet created. So, is it a complete creation or an incomplete creation? There is no better description of this stage of embryogenesis than the Qur'anic description, 'partly formed and partly unformed', as in the following verse:

"WE created you Out of dust, then out of Sperm, then out of a leech-like Clot, then out of a morsel Of flesh, partly formed And partly unformed."

Scientifically we know that at this early stage of development there are some cells which are differentiated and there are some cells that are undifferentiated---some organs are formed and yet others unformed.

Thefirst sense to develop in a developing human embryo is hearing. The foetus can hear sounds after the 24th wek. Subsequently, the sense of sight is developed and by the 28th week, the retina becomes sensitive to light. Consider the following Qur'anic verses related to the development of the senses in the embryo:

"And HE gave You (the faculties of) hearing And sight and feeling (And understanding)."

"Verily WE created Man from a drop Of mingled sperm, In order to try him: So WE gave him (the gifts), Of Hearing and Sight."

"It is HE WHO has created For you (the faculties of) Hearing, sight, feeling And understanding: little thanks It is ye give!"

In all these verses the sense of hearing is mentioned before that of sight. Thus the Qur'anic description matches with the discoveries in modern embryology.

5. Qur'an reveals Earth is round !

This is nothing but a blatant lie. There is no sura in Quran that can claim for accuracy to reveal that earth is round. The reality is totally opposite. Let's find some of those wonderful cosmological facts from Quran. In many places of "miaculous" Quran it alludes to the fact that earth is flat and mountains are like poles, which create a balance so that earth does not tilt. In chapter 88:17,20 it is recorded....

Even Muslim scholars things that In this phrase 'how it spread', he denotes that earth is flat. All the scholars of Islam agree upon this. It is NOT round as the physicists claim.

There are some other suras excerpted from Quran for the discerning readers to prove that Quran clearly supports the erroneous "flat earth" theory [9]:

Now let's check two prominent suras from Quran. In one sura Qur'an says that one of the righteous men of God's servants saw the Sun setting in a certain place of the Earth-in particular a well full of water and mud. There, this man found some people. Let us read what is recorded in the Qur'an (chapter "the Cave", verse 86):

Any reader who have some common sense and preliminary knowledge of science, knows that sun does not need to have any "rising" or "setting" place, because, sun actually neither rise, nor does it set. It is the diurnal motion of the earth which makes appear for sun's rising and setting. But alas ! It seems that our omniscient Allah does not know the simple scientific truth. Allah thought that Sun needs a definite rising and setting place for it. Such wrong idea that is revealed in Holy Quran eventually concludes that Allah considered that our earth is not round but flat.

After Maurice Bucaille's "Bible Quran and Science" had appeared in the market in 1976, it created a sensation among the Muslim community . A new trend is observed to relate modern science science with the so called holy books. Readers may get astonished to know how Western $cientists (yes! they are $cientists, not scientists) are Bribed, Duped into Endorsing so called "Quranic" Science :

In Bangladesh we have seen some morally degraded flock of sheep like Professor Shamsher Ali, Abdul Kader Chwdhury, M. Ferdous Khan, M. Akbar Ali have already started writing so called "super scientific" books following the leading ewe - The great Bucaille and The great Moore. The most prominent fundamentalist organization named Islamic Foundation of Bangladesh have undertaken some "wonderful" projects and philanthropic tasks of unfolding the scientific miracles hidden in Quran ! Hundreds of popular pseudo-scientific books have already been written in Bangla to influence the common people of Bangladesh. Some of the popular and prestigious books that can be easily found in Nilkhet, Newmarket, Shahabag Aziz super market are - "Scientifc Indication of Holy Quran", "Al-Quran ek Moha Biggyan", "Mohakash o koraner challenge (part 1 and 2)", "Biigyan na Koran?", " Biggyan O Al-Quran" etc. Many of those prestigious publications is already out of market because of its high demand and appreciation Nationally and sometimes Internationally. But what is actually written in those pseudo-scientific books ? Are they really dealing with science ? Dear Readers, have patience. Wait for my second part.

Before I present the PROOFS about the earth rotating around its axle in the Noble Quran, there are two Noble Verses that need to be addressed: 18:86, 18:90 and 20:130:

"Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water: Near it he found a People: We said: 'O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness.' (The Noble Quran, 18:86)"

"Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no covering protection against the sun. (The Noble Quran, 18:90)"
